Chapter 728: On Duty
"Alright, I’ve said what I needed to say, you can leave now. Don’t come back if there’s nothing, and preferably don’t come back even if there is." Xu Ke began to see them off, but no one was upset; in fact, some could barely restrain the smiles on their faces.
When the hotel doors opened, Xu Ke didn’t speak to stop them or even block them, and these people scampered off like birds returning to the forest, even the bully who had been in pain earlier fled quickly.
It wasn’t until all the small-time hooligans left the hotel that Xu Ke felt he could finally believe this catastrophe was truly behind him. The innkeeper and his wife hugged each other, while Alice was sandwiched in the embrace of her parents. They held Alice tightly, as if fearing their daughter might disappear if their grip wasn’t firm enough.
Alice understood her parents’ feelings, so even though their embrace was uncomfortable, she didn’t express it. Instead, she patiently consoled her anxious parents.
Alice truly possessed a tender heart that didn’t match her exterior.
Xu Ke watched as this family embraced each other, surviving the disaster, and couldn’t help but smile at the corners of his eyes.
Just when Xu Ke planned to return to his room, Alice gently broke free from her mother’s embrace and approached Xu Ke.
"I really want to thank you for what happened today. I don’t know how to express our gratitude, so I’ve decided that from now on, our inn’s door will always be open to you, and we’ll never charge you. You can stay here as long as you like without any costs," Alice said, bowing to Xu Ke.
"Such a gift is too valuable. This was just a small effort for me. If you really want to thank me, how about inviting me to a meal? I haven’t had breakfast yet, and I’m a bit hungry," Xu Ke grinned at Alice.
Alice was dazzled by Xu Ke’s smile, feeling her cheeks warm and her heart pounding in her chest more rapidly than ever before. She didn’t dare to look directly into Xu Ke’s eyes.
Regarding Alice’s girlish feelings, Xu Ke was completely oblivious. In fact, when it came to emotions, Xu Ke was quite obtuse.
After enjoying a lovely breakfast at the hotel, Xu Ke set off for the Calvin Family’s home.
Because the inn wasn’t far from the Calvin Family’s place, even though Xu Ke didn’t leave early, he definitely wasn’t late.
By the time he arrived at the Calvin Family’s, it was nearly time for the lessons to start. Four equestrian instructors had already gathered, while only two or three of the children from the Calvin Family had shown up, including the twins Xu Ke had met before.
The twin brothers glanced at the other three equestrian instructors, then nodded slightly at Xu Ke.
Though the Calvin Family hired four equestrian instructors, there were far too many children. Excluding those too young or otherwise unsuitable, more than a dozen children attended equestrian lessons, nearly 20 altogether.
Thus, though four instructors seemed like a lot, they were actually insufficient.
If a child’s family could afford to hire an instructor, like the twins from less privileged backgrounds, they’d rely on the Calvin Family’s hired instructors.
In high society, horse riding was essential. For a child of a prominent family, not knowing how to ride would be a joke, an unbecoming jest for the Calvin Family.
Hence, the twins valued these equestrian lessons greatly. In other words, any child punctual to class held the lessons in high esteem and had ambitions.
By lesson time, eight of the Calvin children had gathered. Besides the twins and one more familiar to Xu Ke, the rest were unfamiliar to him.
Eight children, four instructors; someone reasoned it should be one instructor per two children.
During recruitment, they were the ones evaluated, and now, during lessons, they were again the chosen ones, though more overtly this time.
The four stood in a row, observing the eight students before them, waiting for two students to approach each, so the lesson could formally begin.
The young gentlemen and ladies didn’t delay long, choosing based on their instinct which instructor they preferred.
"I hope we can get along well in the days to come," Nancy was the first to choose, standing before Xu Ke with a perfectly cordial smile.
"I will do my best to guide you," Xu Ke nodded.
Nancy smiled and stood behind Xu Ke.
After Nancy’s decision, the twins approached Xu Ke. "We hope we can become as skilled as you," the younger twin said.
"As long as you’re willing to learn diligently, surpassing me is only a matter of time," Xu Ke replied with a smile.
Originally calm, the other three equestrian instructors grew concerned when they saw that three out of eight students had already chosen Xu Ke, especially the only female instructor among them.
This differed from her expectations; she thought the students had predetermined their choices before arrival, with two selecting each instructor, not three favoring one.
However, she seemed to have worried prematurely, as even the famously ill-tempered Marian walked over to Xu Ke.
"I’m choosing you not because you’re impressive, just because I like the bustle. So don’t get any ideas or act superior; just teach me well and you’ll be rewarded. Fail, and you’ll regret it," Marian smirked malevolently.
In the face of Marian’s threats, Xu Ke remained impassive, offering a token polite remark before closing his mouth.
Of those who chose Xu Ke, Nancy frowned at Marian, and though the twins’ expressions remained neutral, their eyes were cold.
From the remaining four, those who initially wanted Xu Ke as their instructor shifted their attention after seeing Marian join his group.
Marian wasn’t one to be trifled with; compared to chaotic student life, they preferred it more peaceful.
The last four quickly made their choices, two selecting the same instructor, leaving one instructor with no students.
The instructor left without students was the concerned female instructor.
The steward, standing nearby, approached with a smile, speaking to the anxious female instructor, "Though unfortunate, it seems you can’t continue working for the Calvin Family, as you have no students, something unforeseen."
The female instructor seemed to sense what the steward would say, reaching out to grab his arm, a plea in her expression.
