Alice always believed that a toy store was a paradise for children, one of the purest places in the world, but she never imagined that this place wasn’t clean either. For a moment, the collapse of her past perceptions left her expression blank, and her perception of the outside world plummeted to its lowest.
The girl who spoke earlier had not expected to gain such an unexpected advantage, and her expression turned particularly smug, making one’s teeth itch in anger just looking at her.
"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and pay," the girl raised an eyebrow and said to Xu Ke, "Aren’t you always so willing to stand up for others? Keep standing out then."
The two girls following the lead girl saw that with just a few words, their boss had made the clerk stand on their side, and their hearts were no longer flustered. They were even more arrogant than their boss, walking straight to the counter, trying to hit the glass cover. When they couldn’t open it, they turned their attention to the toys exposed outside, looking at Xu Ke and Alice with eyes full of malice and provocation, blatantly took down the toys in front of everyone, and smashed them hard on the ground.
The loud noise drew everyone’s attention, and the girl shrugged indifferently, saying casually, "My hands slipped, just put it on that man’s tab. Since he’s so rich and loves to show off, let him cover it. Just make sure you don’t ask the wrong person, or you’ll end up with nothing."
The girl’s gaze swept over the clerk and then fell on the toys in the store, making the clerk’s heart tremble with a fleeting sense of foreboding.
Soon, the clerk’s unease became reality. The girls exchanged glances, seeing a gleam of troublemaking in each other’s eyes. Next moment, the other two started smashing things around Xu Ke and Alice. Instantly, the room was filled with the sounds of things shattering. Originally, the clerk tried to stop them, but seeing that in the blink of an eye, four or five expensive toys were destroyed, she gave up, focusing solely on Xu Ke and Alice, with a feeling of resignation.
The three clerks joined forces to block the exit, preventing anyone from leaving the room. The destruction continued inside, and the girls were getting more excited, ending up lifting chairs from the floor and smashing them down on the counter. The sound of shattered glass accompanied the destruction of exquisite SD dolls inside.
Alice was trembling all over and finally turned her head away, unable to bear witnessing it any longer. She genuinely liked these dolls, and seeing them destroyed felt as if someone was carving flesh from her chest, causing a burning sensation with every breath due to the hurt.
Xu Ke noticed Alice’s reaction, hesitated briefly, then placed his hand on Alice’s back, giving her a hug, and quietly comforted her, "Don’t be afraid, I will protect you and won’t let them hurt you."
Xu Ke assumed that Alice was scared of these people, so he watched the six people present sharply to prevent any underhanded attacks, unaware of what exactly Alice was afraid of. Thus, he missed the moment when Alice raised her head abruptly upon hearing his reassurance, with her ears and neck flushing red.
Alice responded lightly.
Xu Ke quietly watched the three women go crazy smashing things, his expression unchanged from the beginning to the end.
"Phew, satisfying!" The leading girl, with cheeks swollen from Alice’s hit, looked around the now wrecked toy store and ignored the throbbing pain to smile.
"Is that all? There’s more excitement ahead," Xu Ke looked at her shiny face drenched in sweat and smiled as he spoke.
"What do you mean?" The girl furrowed her brows, puzzled by Xu Ke’s fearless face, her earlier thrill from causing trouble dwindling significantly.
"You’ll find out soon enough," Xu Ke said, keeping a mysterious smile on his face.
"Big sister, why waste so many words on him? It’s uncertain if he and that bitch can even walk out of this store today. After all, the store has been trashed, this stuff together should make him bankrupt, right?" The girl with the high ponytail fiddled with her hair, looking at Xu Ke and Alice with a blatant malicious grin.
"You’re not qualified to let me willingly be a sucker. Whoever smashed stuff pays," Xu Ke said without any hesitation, facing the three girls.
Upon hearing that Xu Ke refused to pay, before the three girls could react, the store’s three clerks anxiously chimed in, "You can’t just not pay. If you don’t, it’ll fall on us, and we’re just ordinary employees. We don’t have that much money. If we can’t pay, we’ll not only lose this job but we’ll also end up in jail." The clerk wearing a cap said.
"Can you really bear to see us go to jail? For God’s sake, you’re so kind; surely, you’d help us out, right? This money is nothing to you, but to us, it’s our future, our life. I have a child to support at home; I can’t afford for anything to happen." A woman with red gloves looked tearfully at Xu Ke and Alice.
"What kind of reasoning is that? Just because he’s wealthy, the fault isn’t mine, and it should be pinned on me? Doing so, God is watching from above. If he sees his followers acting so shamelessly, he would be ashamed enough to bash his head against the wall," Alice said furiously, her face reddening with anger.
Though Alice’s words made the clerk’s face flush with shame, and she lowered her head, she remained firmly standing at the door, unwilling to step aside, apparently unchanged in resolve. Alice was both furious and amused by the shamelessness of these three people.
"I suggest you let us go now. If not, your fate might be worse than what you’ve just described," Xu Ke said seriously, staring at the clerks blocking their way.
"Tsk, you pretend quite convincingly. Let’s see if you’re really as tough as you claim." The girl with the high ponytail glanced at her boss, then, without another word, swung the stick in her hand towards Xu Ke’s head.
