Chapter 717: Victory
Among the most perilous moments was when the horse unexpectedly attempted to slam Xu Ke onto the ground from its back. Initially, those who had little interest in the horse training were suddenly gripped with suspense at this reversal, unsure whether they hoped Xu Ke would fall off or continue to persevere.
The crowd watched tensely, staring at the person on the horse’s back, but the one who should have been most anxious showed no sign of panic. Xu Ke even let go of the reins voluntarily, raising his hand to strike the horse’s neck. With just one punch, the horse neighed painfully, lifting its front hooves, halting its earlier attempt to throw Xu Ke off.
Xu Ke leaned down, pressing against the horse’s back as he firmly declared to the black horse, "I told you to behave, or I will beat you dead."
The black horse, once more feeling the murderous intent in Xu Ke’s voice, anxiously pawed at the ground but dared not make any major moves to try and throw Xu Ke off again.
Xu Ke patted the horse’s neck twice, tugged the reins, squeezed with his legs, and began to trot around the arena.
Perhaps due to the impact of the previous punch, the black horse refrained from causing trouble this time, obediently following Xu Ke’s commands. Xu Ke rode the black horse around the arena twice, using the first lap to harmonize with the horse and the second to perform several high-level maneuvers before finally stopping.
The applause from the crowd began the moment Xu Ke jumped off the horse. Regardless of his actual performance, Xu Ke’s superb display on horseback, along with the danger he faced in taming the black horse, merited the applause from everyone present.
Even enemies in the crowd applauded, with the exception of the man who had entered the arena with Xu Ke for the competition.
Xu Ke, with a gentle smile, thanked the crowd before turning his gaze toward that man, "Why are you still here?"
"You!" The man’s face flushed red with anger at Xu Ke’s words.
"What I mean is, why haven’t you chosen your horse yet? Or have you decided to willingly concede defeat?" Xu Ke’s provocative words were not sincere, yet they seemed to achieve his goal. This man had no further use to Xu Ke, who was not someone who liked to leave things unfinished.
Despite Xu Ke’s lack of sincerity, the man fell for the provocation. He had originally planned to choose one of the two brown horses, believing they seemed more docile and easier to tame. But that would appear like he was only doing so to win against Xu Ke.
"Of course I’ve chosen already, I was just waiting here because we both picked the same horse. Otherwise, why would I be standing here?" The man arrogantly raised his chin as he looked at Xu Ke.
Xu Ke’s gaze swept over the man from head to toe, like an invisible slap across the man’s face, "Are you serious? Falling off a horse is no joke; you could end up disabled or permanently injured. Are you really ready to pay such a high price?"
"Stop trying to scare me with such talk. I see you’re just afraid I’ll surpass you. I won’t fall for it, I’ll show you what true skill is." The man raised a middle finger toward Xu Ke.
"Since you insist, then I’ll look forward to it." Xu Ke shrugged, stepped aside, and left the space to the man.
Only when the man held the reins did he begin to feel nervous belatedly. But with dozens of people watching, backing out now would be like a slap to his face. How could he give up? If he quit now, he’d never be able to face people again.
After Xu Ke stepped aside, he intended to leave the arena but was promptly stopped by the man again, "I just realized, we haven’t stated our wager yet."
"What do you want to bet?" Xu Ke turned back to ask him.
"If I win, you’ll kneel and polish my shoes today."
"And if you lose?"
"I’ll leave it to you to decide."
"Then it will be the same as your demand." Xu Ke gave the man a meaningful look, then exited the arena to leave the space to him.
The man took a deep breath, clenching his fists with determination as he walked toward the black horse, muttering to himself, "If an Asian can manage it, there’s no reason I can’t. I can too."
He stopped a step away from the black horse, but even this distance made the horse uncomfortable, causing it to paw the ground restlessly and snort at the man.
Earlier, the horse’s actions had given the man a big scare. Fortunately, it was only internal fright, not showing in his actions, preserving his demeanor. The man assured himself in his heart.
The man first recalled in his mind how Xu Ke had handled it, running through the steps in his head to ensure there were no mistakes. Then, with confidence, he reached out his hand, intending to touch the horse’s head to establish rapport and ease the horse’s wariness.
The man’s confidence was evident as he reached out, but he failed to notice the horse’s differing attitude between him and Xu Ke. Before his hand could touch the horse, the horse’s hoof had already made contact with him.
What does it feel like to be kicked by a horse in front of a crowd?
Besides the embarrassment, there was mainly the pain. A horse doesn’t temper its strength like a human might. The man lay on the ground, vision darkening, unable to move, looking as if he were dead.
The crowd outside was momentarily chaotic, but thankfully, the Calvin Family’s medical team arrived swiftly, restoring people’s courage to continue the competition. As for the unfortunate one kicked unconscious, no one cared about him anymore. Everyone was focused on how to conquer the unruly wild horse safely.
No one left was without tension, except Xu Ke, who had long since ended his challenge. Sitting relaxedly on a chair, he paid no attention to others’ scores, acting as if he had no worry about being excluded from the finalist group, enjoying his fruit plate leisurely.
"This Easterner is quite interesting." In a two-story building behind them, a red-haired man put down his binoculars, a faint smile on his lips as he spoke.
"If you’re interested, why not go and see? Meet the teachers who can instruct us." Next to him stood another man identical in appearance; when they stood face to face, it was like looking into a mirror.
This pair of twins was born to a mistress of Bart Calvin, the elder named Job Calvin, and the younger Albo Calvin. The brothers put down their binoculars and headed together toward the arena.
"Tch, just a bunch of lowly servants. Since when do the masters need to seek out the servants? No wonder they’re children of a petty merchant’s mother, how disgraceful. Go call that Easterner here to see me." A platinum-blonde girl cast a sideways glance at her servant as she spoke.
