Chapter 715 - 714: Job Application

The man raised his hand as if he wanted to hit Xu Ke, but saw Xu Ke chuckling softly, "Are you sure you want to start a fight with me here? Have you forgotten what kind of occasion this is? If you fight me here, don’t you want this job anymore?" Xu Ke asked with a smile, his eyes full of confidence.
The man’s hand, raised high, was lowered due to Xu Ke’s words, but this didn’t mean he was going to let Xu Ke off easily. Just letting Xu Ke slip through his fingers would be a huge loss of face for him.
The man tongued his back molars and looked at Xu Ke fiercely, saying, "For the sake of my job, I won’t hit you, but I’ll beat you in horsemanship, to show you that this is not a game for a yellow-skinned monkey like you."
The man gave Xu Ke the middle finger, full of threat and provocation.
"Is that so? Then I’ll be waiting." Xu Ke replied nonchalantly.
The ease of Xu Ke’s response made the man’s expression instantly darken, feeling like he punched a soft target, and a sense of shame arose in his heart, as if no matter what he did, the other party wouldn’t care.
But the man didn’t know that, in some ways, he had indeed guessed Xu Ke’s thoughts correctly, as Xu Ke really hadn’t regarded him seriously from the beginning.
In Xu Ke’s eyes, the man was just a clown jumping around, and the reason for keeping him around was merely to draw others’ attention.
And those others were none other than everyone in the Calvin Family.
How to make oneself stand out from the crowd? Of course, by creating different memorable moments with others.
"Just wait, you yellow-skinned monkey. I’ll make you cry when you lose, I’ll make you watch as I gain everything you’ll never have, I’ll trample you underfoot, making you my ant." The man swung his arm at Xu Ke.
"If this weren’t at the Calvin Family, you’d already be knocked to the ground by me long ago. You should really be thankful for being here, saving your face that makes people want to vomit." The man made a face at Xu, continuing to taunt him verbally since he couldn’t fight, while the people who had come for interviews kept a distance, watching the drama unfold.
"You should also be thankful to be at the Calvin Family, as I’ll respect the host’s property by not attacking. Otherwise, I’d have whipped your mouth shut by now, that mouth that drinks toilet water and reeks." Xu Ke gave the man a lazy glance, a brief smirk playing on his lips, quickly replaced by a look of contempt.
The man’s anger flared again with the soft laughter around him, but he didn’t get much chance to act as the butler arrived, leading four high-quality horses—black, white, and two brown ones.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming to the Darwin family after seeing the recruitment ad. On behalf of the Calvin Family, I thank you all for your trust and support." The butler said in an elegant voice, his demeanor noble yet not arrogant, looking like an aristocrat from the previous century.
"However, not all of you present today can stay. Only the four best can stay, and the condition for deciding who can stay is very simple. These four horses in front of you are untamed and wild. Whoever can tame one of them in the shortest time will be the final winner."
The butler stepped back gracefully after speaking, leaving the venue for the applicants.
The field fell silent, no one dared to open the door to the paddock, everyone was watching the butler, waiting for his next instruction. But the butler just smiled and stood quietly, looking like a statue from a museum, except he was breathing and blinking.
"Mr. Butler, is there nothing else you’d like to say?" Someone asked cautiously after glancing at the horses in the field.
"No, I’ve said all I wanted to say." The butler replied with a smile.
The crowd buzzed at the butler’s words, not sure what to do. Shouldn’t he announce who would start first? Should they decide on their own? People began to chatter noisily.
"Mr. Butler, aren’t you going to call out names to designate who enters the paddock to tame the wild horses?" someone asked, voicing a common doubt.
"That’s not necessary now. A cute little fellow has already gone in." The butler said with a smile.
Everyone followed the butler’s gaze.
Earlier, Xu Ke had been standing among the tall Dutchmen, barely noticeable, blocked from view. But now everyone could see him, as he had somehow opened the paddock gate and entered.
"Tch, just wants to steal the spotlight. I’ll see how you’ll steal the spotlight when you’re thrown off by the horse." The man who had quarreled with Xu Ke earlier said disdainfully.
His voice wasn’t loud, but noticeable in the quiet moment when no one else was speaking.
In the paddock, Xu Ke heard the man’s words and turned to look at the man still outside with a raised brow, his whole face animated. "Weren’t you the one who wanted to compete with me? I’m already in the arena, what are you waiting for?"
Xu Ke’s words shifted the attention of the crowd to the man, their faces eager for drama, and the man’s expression stiffened slightly. "I haven’t forgotten about our competition, but since you’re already in the arena, how can I get in now?" The man was briefly flustered but quickly praised himself for being smart.
"Both of you can certainly be in the same paddock. Right now, there are four horses in the paddock, and anyone who wants to try can step up." The butler said with a smile, showing no hint that his words could be a huge blow to the man.
Taming a wild horse isn’t easy, with few succeeding on the first try. Most people wanted to wait and see, learn from others’ failures before attempting themselves. So, no one wanted to be the first to tame a wild horse. Xu Ke trying to grab the spotlight was something they didn’t mind, they even wished for more bold ones like him. Now Xu Ke was pulling the man in, and they had no reason to stop it.
