I returned to the bridge alone, leaving Ries to deal with the android in her workshop since I could pilot the ship without her.
"Whatâs the situation?" I asked, taking a seat on the Captainâs chair.
"Three pirate ships warped in just now, Captain. Right there," Mara reported, projecting a screen in front of me.
The screen showed a map of the area with three red dots at the very edge while we were in the centre.
I frowned, "Have they spotted us yet?"
Amber was the one who answered instead, "It doesnât look like it... We had shut down our shipâs engines before we went in and they arenât actively scanning the area as well so we shouldnât have shown up on their radar yet... The debris around the station is also hiding us as well."
Right, the only reason why we knew the pirates were even there was because they had most likely approached this place using Travel speeds and when they shut off their Travel Drives, the pulse of energy was picked up by our sensors which was how we knew they were there.
I waved the screen away, "Do we know what they are doing here then?"
Amber appeared beside me, "I guess they might have picked up on the stationâs generators being turned on or something? I wouldnât be surprised if they had posted someone or something here to keep watch on the station in case someone comes by."
"Great... What are they doing here then? Donât tell me theyâre going to enter the station?"
"Theyâre probably just here to check things out for now."
Lea turned to me, "Should I shoot them down, Mistress?"
I held up my hand, "Take aim at them for now but if they donât see us... Let them go."
"Of course, Mistress."
The turrets at the top of our ship slowly spun to aim themselves at the direction of the pirate ships.
"Do we have visual on them?" I asked.
"Right here, Mistress."
Lea projected another screen in front of me and I could just barely see the dark shapes of the pirate ships moving a distance away behind a wall of debris.
By the size of their ships, I believe they should be B Class Heavy Fighters.
They seem to be maintaining their distance for now and were just surveying the area from where they were.
All of us watched in silence as the three ships floated ominously before one of them broke away from the group and sped away, leaving only two of them behind.
Then, right as I was wondering if they had spotted us, the two ships sped towards the station, weaving through the debris field to get closer.
Damn... Even if they didnât see us right now, the moment they get past the debris field would be the time they would undoubtedly spot us.
Shit... Guess weâll have to fight after all because thereâs no way weâre letting these pirates get away with news of our presence here.
Before I could call Lea to start shooting, Mara swivelled to me.
"Captain? Theyâre hailing us..."
Shit...
"That means they already know weâre here, donât they?"
"It just means they have spotted us... But we could just pretend weâre a derelict ship and no one is on board I suppose... But since they are moving here, they might try to board us..."
"Should we just shoot them down?"
All of us turned to watch the screen and I realised the pirates have stopped flying towards us and weâre parked behind several floating debris, using them as a shield.
Not that it would have a use since I fully believe Lea would be able to shoot through the debris and destroy them if she wanted to.
Lea had her hands on the weapons control, "Itâs your call, Mistress."
I weighed my options for a moment.
We could just kill them, but I believe the ship that flew off at the beginning must have returned to report our presence to their group. So even if we killed them, it wouldnât keep our presence a secret and the pirates might even retaliate.
"Patch them through," I decided.
A screen popped up overhead and a pirate wearing a full face helmet appeared on the screen.
"Greetings. What might you be up to here?"
I instantly knew what he was trying to do.
"No need to pretend, we know youâre pirates, what do you want?"
The guyâs demeanor changed almost immediately, "Hmph... Guess you ainât as dumb as you look. Questionâs the same though, what are you up to here?"
"Weâre just exploring the station. Got a problem?"
"Well youâre in our turf right now so--"
"Lea, warning shot."
My Alv fired a single laser shot, the beam piercing through the debris that the pirates were hiding behind and just narrowly missing their ships.
The pirate quickly changed his tone again, "Ah but err... You know, the station there is a wreck anyway so you can just keep whatever you got!"
I raised an eyebrow at him, "So is there anything else?"
"N... No! We will be just--"
Before the pirate could finish his words, an alarm blared from the console indicating more ships were arriving.
The pirate must have also received the same warning and also knew who exactly was coming because his attitude changed once again.
"But on second thought! Since youâre not asking for permission to be here... You need to pay us a toll!!"
Did this guy really not consider that we could still kill him anyway but letâs just hold back for now.
I didnât say anything and watched as four B Class ships and one C Class Corvette dropped out of Travel speeds and appeared at the edge of the debris field.
Since the pirate didnât change his attitude one more time, I would have to assume that these ships were indeed on his side and who he thought were going to back him up.
Mara turned to me, "Captain... Theyâre hailing us."
Of course they are.
I nodded at her and another screen appeared beside the first pirateâs screen, showing another person that was also wearing a full face helmet though his armour seemed to be more high tech than the first pirateâs armour.
Despite the fact that the first pirate had his face hidden, I could somehow tell that he had a really smug smile behind that helmet of his.
Most likely he fully believes that the advantage now lies on their side right now and if it came down to a fight, we would be on the losing side.
I noticed that the turrets on the top of our ship started to turn ever so slightly as Lea switched the targets of the turrets to take aim at the newcomers.
The new pirate took a moment to inspect me for a moment before finally speaking, "You donât need to be scared, weâre not here to fight you. At least not now. We already know who you are, Tera of Teran Mercenary Company. We are also aware that some of our members had a small scuffle with you on your way here and we arenât here to get revenge or anything like that either."
Oh? Thatâs actually surprising. And it looks like the first pirate was also surprised by how he jerked back a little when he heard those words.
First they admit that they knew who we were and that they even knew about the skirmish with their members. Iâm guessing those survivors finally reported back to them or something and they did some research on us or something.
I nodded at him, "So what do you want? You canât expect me to believe you brought this many ships just to say hi, right?"
"Thatâs partially why weâre here actually. We are aware of why your group is here in this very system and our leader would like to extend an offer for cooperation with you and your shipâs crew."
That got my attention and I raised an eyebrow at the pirate, "An offer of cooperation? Why?"
"The treasure can be shared and our leader believes you also find the Leviathan blocking the Warp Gate to be a troublesome problem, correct? Thatâs why you came to this derelict to see if you could find anything related to it in the first place."
I said nothing and merely stared at the pirate.
He didnât look surprised by my lack of response and shrugged, "I say this because thatâs what we did as well when we found the Leviathan there. The difference is that we couldnât get the power generators up and running and we could see that you had no problems doing that and perhaps already extracted what you needed from their terminals. You have the information, we have the potential firepower to deal with the Leviathan. Why not work together?"
"You expect me to believe that pirates wonât just backstab us the first chance you get?"
"I know that I cannot speak for my other compatriots in this business, but our leader personally guarantees your safety and would like to meet you to discuss this. To show our sincerity, Iâm sending you a map of our current base and we shall await your presence there."
A screen appeared to the side and it was a map that showed that ice planet and the location of their base which was a little useless since we already knew where it was.
He didnât wait for me to respond and merely cut the call and all the pirates turned and flew away.
Damn... Now what?
