Junto con sus colegas y amigos epistolares H.P. Lovecraft y R.E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, nacido en Long Valley, California, en 1893, formaba parte del grupo conocido como «los tres mosqueteros de Weird Tales», que nutrió las páginas del popular magacín con relatos fantásticos y de terror, contribuyendo al auge de la revista en su era dorada (1928-1939) y creando un nuevo tipo de ficción de terror.Clark Ashton Smith vivió la mayor parte de su vida en una cabaña del pueblo de Auburn, en California, donde se ocupó de su propia educación. Tras una primera etapa como poeta, en 1926 comienza a escribir relatos de corte fantástico que va publicando en Weird Tales. Aunque vivió hasta 1961, en 1937, sin motivo aparente, dejó de escribir.Zothique (1932-1937), reúne los dieciséis relatos ambientados en el mundo imaginario de Zotique. Según Lin Carter: «C. A. Smith concibe Zothique como el último continente de la Tierra, en un futuro muy distante en el que el sol se ha oscurecido, el mundo ha envejecido y feroces mares han engullido el resto de los continentes. Las ciencias han sido olvidadas con el devenir de los siglos; las oscuras artes de la brujería y la magia han resurgido. El resultado es un mundo oscuro de misterios ancestrales donde reyes lujuriosos y depravados y héroes vagabundos exploran y viven aventuras en paisajes tenebrosos, luchando con fuerza y sabiduría contra poderosos nigromantes y dioses extraños, bajo un sol moribundo».Comentaba Lovecraft: «C. A. Smith utiliza siempre como fondo un universo tremendamente remoto y paralizante; selvas de flores venenosas e iridiscentes en las lunas de Saturno, ominosos y grotescos templos en la Atlántida, en Lemuria y en olvidados mundos más antiguos, y pantanos malsanos y húmedos salpicados de hongos mortíferos en regiones espectrales más allá de los confines de la tierra».
