PREFACE
Another forayi nto fileds as well-plougheda s Zionism and the
Palestine conflict requires some explana tion and definition. Tbis
work is not a history of the alPestine disturbanceofs 1936-1939
nor of the Zionistmo vement in those years, noorf the Palestinian
Arabsan d the Arabn ational movecent.
What I have attemptedt o do, by the descriptioonf several
related issuesa nd events duringt he period,a nd sometimes back­
trackings lightlyf or the sake of continuityi,s to showh ow the
Zionistrse latetdo t he Arabso f Palestine and of the neighbour ing
coun tries; to what extent theype rceived the existenceo f an HArab
quesito n• " how they defined1 t and how they dealt with it.
The fact that it wasi n these yearst hat the Palestine con­
flict moved fatefully and irrevocablyb eyo nd the borders of the
country led me to believet hat it was importantt o examine the
questiono f Zionista ttitudest o the Arab worldi n generalan d to
the pan-Arabmo veme nt in pe.rticulnanrd not to looks olely at
relations with the Arabso f Palestine, as several previouswo rks
have done.
