La traduzione era del resto per Tabucchi – egli stesso traduttore – un atto ermeneutico tra i più complessi ed essenziali per la comprensione piena di un testo: basti pensare all’importanza che la traduzione, alla quale è ritornato ripetutamente, ha avuto per il Tabucchi studioso di Fernando Pessoa. Non sorprende, dunque, che abbia accettato di rispondere in modo ampio ed esaustivo alle domande di Gumpert e di Chrysostomidis, relative non solo all’opera, ma alla vita, al rapporto con la scrittura, la letteratura, le arti figurative, il cinema, a questioni di natura filosofica e speculativa, politica e sociale. Un libro prezioso e godibilissimo, che costituisce un importante documento per la conoscenza di uno degli scrittori più importanti della letteratura contemporanea italiana ed europea.
