Es el meollo de la espontaneidad taoísta: dejar a todas las cosas su libre curso, rechazando las diferencias mentales entre bien y mal, vida y muerte, etc. Dichas oposiciones son cambios sin término, y no un comienzo o un fin.El sabio debe identificarse con el Tao y dejar discurrir espontáneamente su vida, suprimiendo metas y deseos, y alcanzando así la genuina libertad. Doctrina ésta que muestra una clara sintonía con el pensamiento budista.Aunque el Zhuang-Zi se remonta al siglo -IV, su mayor difusión la alcanzó en la época Wei Jin, ejerciendo una enorme influencia entre los pensadores chinos, y formando con el Tao-te-king (o Lao-Zi) y el Lie-Zi, la trilogía clásica del taoísmo. Su repercusión en el mundo occidental ha sido también importantísima.
