Karl-Harry’s ‘Last Line’ on how hard things are for anyone trying to
make it as a choreographer definitely rang true for some of you.
We have had e mails and calls expressing support to what was
said and it is prompting me now to pick up the ball and look at
this ongoing problem.
The trouble seems to be that although we, as an industry, have lots and lots of talented
choreographers in our midst but because of the relentless waltz of weekly releases from better known
names that seems to take place, chances are that however talented you may be you don’t stand an
earthling when it comes to release a new dance.
Instructors have a hard time making decisions because even if they favour trying out something
new, the reality is that popularity will dictate what they teach. No one can blame a teacher selecting
Maggie’s latest or Kate’s when they know that their class is expecting to learn those dances. And
because we have such a choice of star names, it is almost inevitable that getting known will be very
difficult indeed.
The trouble is also one of choice criteria. How do you choose a new dance ? How many hours can
you spend sifting through videos... and as we all know some of those films are more guesswork
through bad filming and editing than watching pleasure? So is there an answer?
I imagine that if you are one of those choreographers, your heart will be sinking reading my lines
because it is a reality you know well. And I would like to be the first one to tell you that actually in 2013
you can do something about it. If you are serious about a dance and you think it has potential, why
not use the very thing that makes a dance successful (ie: the web) but in a different way.
Whereas yesterday, marketing was the domain of a few, today thanks to social sites like Facebook and
Twitter everyone stands a chance. So if I was in your choreographer’s size 8’s, here’s what I would do
right now...
First you must ensure your dance is perfect. Then shoot the best video you can. Even if you don’t
have a decent camcorder, someone you know will be able to help you...almost guaranteed in this day
and age. Then hit Facebook and Twitter. Tell all the friends you have on those sites about it. No point in
being shy. Concentrate on one dance only. Better a great choreography than an average ten!
By spreading the word that way, dancers will become aware of your dance’s existence. And if your
choeography is as good as you think, it will stand a very good chance of making it. If all the above is
unknown territory to you, ask a young member of the family, believe me, they’ll show you.
I cannot promise that your dance will become a hit. The steps have to work, the music has to engage
(and be available legally) but if you take your own destiny in your hands, at least, you will feel you have
done all you can. And who knows? By using the very thing that all dancers rely upon day after day,
you may just be discovered by thousands. And then finally establish yourself for what you know you
are! A star.
