It is seven o'clock in the morning at Chungking. In a certain schoolroom a class is waiting for the
teacher. Only one of the little boys has ever been at school before. He is an American named Peter
Parish. All the other boys are Chinese. Peter can read and write English. He can speak a little
Now
Chinese. he is going to learn to read and write the Chinese language.
For one happy year Peter, his mother, and little sister have been living in Chungking. They came
to be with Peter's father who is helping the Chinese build roads and bridges and factories. With
all his heart the little boy wants to learn Chinese. He wants to read the signs in the shops, the notices
posted on the walls, and ever so much more. Then he can be more help to his father and mother.
But as Peter sits waiting for the teacher, he is worried. Can he everlearn to read Chinese?The char-
acters seem so strange. All the little boys are watching the door. Their eyes ask, "What will
the teacher be like?"
Tap, tap, tap! Somebody is knocking at the door. It opens
and there is the teacher. He stands before the class smiling.
He bows and all the boys bow in return. Then the teacher
sees Peter. When he speaks he speaks slowly and explains
things so that the American boy will understand.
