When we want to give emphasis in a sentence,
certain negative adverbs and adverbial phrases
may be taken out of their normal position and
placed at the beginning of a sentence or clause.
In this emphatic construction the word order is
inverted: the negative adverbial is placed first,
an auxiliary verb follows it and the subject of the
sentence comes next. E.g.
Regular Formation: He didn’t speak a word.
Inverted Formation: Not a word did he speak.
The two sentences mean the same thing. The
only difference is that the second sentence is
more emphatic.

USING INVERTED SENTENCES
After negative adverbial expressions:
Under no circumstance can we accept credit cards.
Regular formation: We cannot accept credit cards, under any circumstance.
In no way can he be held responsible!
Regular formation: He can’t be held responsible in any way.
.After adverbial expressions of place:
Round the corner came the postman.
On the doorstep was a bunch of flowers.

After adverbs of frequency 'seldom', 'rarely', 'never‘ and 'little':
Seldom have I seen such a beautiful view.
Rarely did he pay anyone a compliment.
Never had I felt so happy.
Little did he imagine how dangerous it would be.
After adverbs of frequency (when one thing happens after another)
'hardly', 'scarcely', 'no sooner', :
Hardly had I begun to speak when I was interrupted.
Scarcely had we started our meal when the phone rang.
No sooner had I arrived than they all started to argue.

After adverbial expressions of degree beginning with 'only' and 'not
only':
Only after the meeting did I realize the importance of the subject.
Only when the plane landed safely did he calm down.
Not only was the car slow, it was also very uncomfortable.
Conditionals with inversions:
In conditional sentences we can sometimes replace the 'if' with an
inversion. Like this:
Regular Formation: If I had known it would be so difficult, I would have
never enrolled.
Inverted Formation: Had I known it would be so difficult, I would never
have enrolled.

1) Only then did/do I understand why my aunt said she couldn’t join us for
dinner.
2) Not only did/does grace love eating chocolates and sweets but she also
