Materials:
 Basic Supplies
Day 1*
Bible
1. This year we will be reading the gospel of Luke. The beginning of Luke you are probably
really familiar with. Do you know what story is in the beginning? (answer: the Christmas
2. story)
3. Read Luke 1:1-38.
4. This was a big deal. Joseph was going to divorce Mary for being pregnant with a baby that
was not his child. Mary’s whole life could have been “ruined.” But she does not argue or
complain, she submits to God’s plan for her life. This will never happen to you, but if God
chooses something hard for your life, do you think you could submit to it cheerfully? The
fact is, all Christians will face struggles. God allows them in our lives for His greater
purpose. It can be hard to submit cheerfully and trust Him to bring about good from it.
History
1. This year we’re going to be learning about the places of the world and the people in it.
First, we have to find them. To do that we need a map!
2. Read through this list of map vocabulary.
3. Look at this map of America. Using your list of map vocabulary words find each of those
things on this map. (Example: Find the title. Find the date….)
4. Here’s an easier grid map to read. The letters and numbers mark the box. If I said that I
live in A1, then you could find column A and row 1 and where those cross, that’s where
my house would be on the map. Do you see my house in A1? (I’m teasing. :) This isn’t a
map of my neighborhood.)
5. Click on a symbol in the key and see what row and column it is in. Click it again to turn
off the highlighting. Click each one on and off to see it’s grid location address.
6. What is in A3? (answer: school)
Science*
1. This year you are going to be learning about the world. We’ll go into the earth, under the
ocean, and even out into space. Let’s start with the world and look at a map.
2. *Print out this map.
3. Color on mountains and deserts. Color in the mountain areas brown and the desert areas
yellow.
4. Spelling tip: desserts (as in a sweet treat after dinner) is spelled with 2 S’es (deSSert)
because everyone wants more dessert.
5. Now go to this map. Click on where you live. Keep clicking on where you live to zoom in.
Can you find it? Are there any mountains or deserts near you? What about rivers or
oceans?
Music
1. Play the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra Game. We are going to do this piece by
piece. Today. You are going to register and start a new game. Read the two pages on
Benjamin Britten and then click to turn the page. You can have it read the pages to you.
Click on quit (in the corner).
2. Listen to part one of the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.

Day 2
Bible
1. This year we’re going to be reading the poetry books of the Bible. One of them is Psalms,
a collection of songs. There are many songs in the Bible. Two are in chapter 1 of Luke.
2. Read Luke 1:39-80.
3. What do Mary and Zechariah sing about? (answer: They sing praises to God and they both
prophesy a little, tell what is to come.)
4. What does Zechariah’s song say about John the Baptist? (answer: He will teach people
how to have their sins forgiven to make the way for Jesus to come.)
History
1. Practice with map keys.
2. Watch the videos on the continents and oceans.
3. After the videos, see if you can label the continents.
4. Find the five oceans on this map. They are written in blue writing. (Artic Ocean, Atlantic
Ocean, Southern Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean)
5. Why is Pacific written twice if it’s only one ocean? (Think about what a globe looks like.)
6. Find the oceans. Choose oceans from the drop down menu.
Science
1. When we read about science, we often come across people saying that the world is
billions of years old. People who believe this don’t believe that God created the world in
six days as described in Genesis.
2. Here’s what the Bible teaches about creation. How can we know what is true?
3. There are resources online if your family wants to study more about creation and the age
of the earth. I have written about this on other science courses and have posted links to
articles.
4. You can talk with your parents about what they believe. When you come across millions
and billions of years, just remember that it’s just what that person believes. It doesn’t
make it fact because they said it. How can those scientists and creation scientists come to
completely different ideas about how the world began? Because they come to the
question with different assumptions. When you assume the Bible is true and the biblical
story of creation is true, then you can view the scientific evidence as affirming that truth.
When you assume that the earth had to come from somewhere, that it couldn’t have been
just created, then it doesn’t make sense that all of a sudden there was a whole earth and
all the vegetation and all the animals, etc. They have to come up with an idea to explain
it. It hasn’t been tested. It hasn’t been proven. Science is based on measurable
observations. They can’t observe the creation of the world. It’s an idea that they have
faith in. I would rather have faith in God and the Bible.

Day 3 *
Bible
1. Read Luke 2:1-20.
2. What do you think the shepherds thought for the next 3o years before Jesus started to
doing ministry?
3. Do you think they recognized who Jesus was when He became famous? Do you think they
ever saw Jesus again?
4. You can see on this map the Bethlehem is close to Jerusalem. (Over on the left near
“administered through Rome.”)
5. Why do you think angels appeared to shepherds and not rich and powerful people?
6. What do you think is the most remarkable part of the story of Jesus’ birth?
History*
1. Watch this video on the different types of maps. (The goal isn’t to know every kind of
map, but to understand that there are lots of different kinds and they each some
something different about the area.)
2. Review maps and different types of maps.
3. *Print out page 1 and follow the directions to answer questions about the map.
Science
1. Read about hot and cold deserts. Did you know there were cold deserts? How can that be?
A desert is where there is very little precipitation, very little rainfall (or snowfall).
2. Look up the highest high and the lowest low temperatures in Fahrenheit.
3. Tell someone how there can be cold deserts. What else did you read about deserts?
Art
1. Look at these paintings. Make observations. What is the painting of? What’s happening?
What colors do you see? What shapes do you see?

Day 4*
Bible
1. Read Luke 2:21-52.
2. Simeon is one of my favorite parts. Here’s a song about Simeon.
3. What do you think Mary and Joseph are thinking after what Simeon and Anna said?
4. I’ve heard people say that they can’t understand how Jesus got separated from his
parents coming home from Jerusalem. When I was living in Macedonia, I remember being
in a Roma (Gypsy) village and my friend losing her two-year old. It turns out a
neighbor/relative had invited her to tag along to the store. Jesus’ family was with a large
caravan. They all knew each other. They were all together. It wouldn’t have been unusual
for the kids to move freely amongst the group. Plus, Jesus was the oldest of Mary and
Joseph’s children. They had at least seven. Mary’s attention wasn’t on making sure Jesus
was close by. He wasn’t the kind of kid you needed to worry about. He was trustworthy.
They didn’t have any concern of him wandering off and causing mischief. I think it was a
huge shock to them that it seemed like Jesus had done something wrong. Jesus somehow
knew that He needed to be in the temple. He thought they must have known too, but they
didn’t have the same Spirit connection to the Father.
5. What’s your favorite part of the story of Jesus being born and growing up?
History*
1. *Print page 2 (and 1 if you don’t mind). Read the directions and label the rooms.
2. You are going to work on making a map. You will choose a starting place and a treasure
hiding place.
3. Make a map.
4. On your map, make sure to use symbols and a key.
5. On your map, make sure you have a compass rose, showing north, south, east and west.
(Hint: The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.)
6. You can either mark the treasure’s location on your map, or you can write directions to
have them find the place on the map. (You could say go into the room to the east. Go
north to the door and the door would be on your map.) They would follow the directions
on your map until the think they know the spot where the treasure is.
7. You can finish this on Day 5.

Day 5 (Optional History Materials: peanut butter, powdered sugar, flour, butter, powdered milk,
candies, chocolate chips, icing, etc. for making an edible map)
Bible
1. Read Luke 3:1-20.
2. Starting with verse 10, the crowd asks John the Baptist about what they should do. I find
it interesting that his answers all relate to money. What are his three
answers? (hint: verses 11, 13-14)
History
1. Finish your map.
2. Put the treasure in the spot.
3. Have someone follow your map to the treasure.
4. If you like, make an edible map. Here’s a place where you can find maps. Once you
choose a country then you can find on the left-hand menu things like a physical map
which will show you mountains.
Science
1. One more day in the rain forest. Then we’ll go down into the earth.
2. Play Amazon Explorer.
PE/Health
1. Watch this video three times and copy the moves.

Day 6
Bible
1. Read Luke 4:1-13.
2. What did Jesus use to defeat Satan’s temptations? (answer: Bible verses)
3. Can you think of something that you are tempted to do wrong and a Bible verse that you
can remember to say to help you make the right choice and win? If you are having
trouble, ask your parents to help.
History (Other reading from libraries or stores: George Muller, reading level is 5th/6th. I’ve
read this aloud to my elementary age children.)
1. We’re going to start our travels in Europe.
2. *Print out and put together a passport. If you just write in the country names, one extra
page should be enough. If you want to get fancy, you’ll need more. You could print out
flag thumbnails and cut and glue them on as your “stamp” for that country, or be really
fancy and print them on label paper and use them as stickers.
3. Fill in the information needed on the passport.
4. Write United Kingdom on your passport. You may want to write the date too. A real
passport always shows the date you entered the country. (This is what it actually looks
like when they stamp your passport. They can be very hard to read, especially when they
are faded and on top of each other.)
5. Find the UK (United Kingdom on a map). (Click on the continent first. Which one?)
6. Would you like to take a look at British money?
Science
1. Read the first two pages about the earth. On the second page you might see a black box
at the bottom of the screen. Give it a minute to load. It’s a spinning earth. Move your
mouse over it and find the four different layers of the earth. Read about them.
2. Label the layers of the earth.
Music
1. Play the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra Game. Log in. Click to turn the page from
the Benjamin Britten page. When you get to the Orchestra page, click on quit (in the
corner).
2. Listen to part two of the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.

Day 7
Bible
1. Read Luke 4:31-44.
2. What does Jesus have the power over? (answer: sickness and demons)
History
1. Use this map of the UK.
2. *Follow the directions to label the map of the United Kingdom. Scroll down to Great
Britain and click on “Mapping the UK.”
3. * On a map, label the UK, or each separate country in the UK with a number. On the back
or a separate paper, write 1 and write the UK next to it, or number and write each
individual country. I suggest printing out the Europe map. You probably want to have
a map of the world too, but I think it’s too small to work with.
4. Play Seterra, UK.
Science
1. Read more about the earth’s crust. (Just this one page)
2. Learn more about the earth’s crust. This mentions that the earth’s crust is actually broken
into sections called plates. These plates float on the mantle level.
3. Read more about the earth’s mantle.
4. How can the earth we stand on be floating!? Explain!

Day 8 (Materials for Science: play dough or salt dough of some sort, preferably in two colors,
can be just a little, BUT on Day 9 they will be building a volcano and can use this dough)
Bible
1. Read Luke 5:1-16. While you read, try to picture it. These were real people experiencing
these things. What did they look like? Sound like? Smell like?
2. In verse 5, what do you think Simon was feeling? What do you think he tried
again? (answer: I think he must have been frustrated that they hadn’t caught anything,
but there must have been something about the way Jesus looked at him that gave him the
feeling he better listen and try again.)
3. When they caught fish, Peter confesses that he’s a sinner. Why? (answer: Maybe he
realized that Jesus performed a miracle and must be a holy man of God.)
History
1. Play Seterra, UK.
2. Go through this European country tutorial. Click on each country on the map. The
squares and dots are to help you click on the tiny countries. Make sure your volume is on
because this site reads the country names to you. You can repeat after the computer to
make sure you know how to pronounce each country.
3. Draw or make out of construction paper the flag of the United Kingdom.
Science
1. Read about the movement of the earth’s crust. Stop on the page with the picture of a
mountain and a picture of a valley. (This site mentions millions of years. You don’t have
to accept that as fact.)
2. You read that there were three ways that the earth’s plates moved. The could pull apart,
crash together, or slide past each other.
3. Take your dough and make two thick plates of the earth’s crust out of them. Now smoosh
them together a little bit to connect them. Now try the three ways of plates moving. What
do you think would happen in those places where the plates were touching?

Day 9

2. *Fill in this worksheet about England. You might want to change landscape to climate.
Here are two sites to help you fill it out.

Science
1. Read about what plate collisions can do. Move through the pages until you read about the
creation of islands.
2. If you have dough from Day 8, form it into a volcano shape around a cup. Put baking
soda into the cup. Pour in vinegar to make your volcano explode. Here are
some directions. (She uses a soda bottle, not a cup, whatever you have. Also, the first
part of the directions is for making salt dough. You already should have that covered, but
it is unnecessary for making the “volcano” explode.

Day 10
Bible
1. Click on today’s featured country on Operation World‘s site or choose from the map.
Read about the country and use the prayer guide.
History
1. Look through the parts of this page. There are facts, photos, a video and an ecard you
can send someone.
2. Play Seterra, UK.
3. Play the European country game level 2.
Science
1. Read about volcanoes. Stop after you read about the Hawaiian Islands.
2. Look at this list of all the volcanoes by country. Find your country. Did you realize that
there were so many volcanoes?
3. You can look at this map to see all of the volcanoes.
PE/Health
1. Read about why water is the best drink to drink.
2. Ask your mom if you can choose a recipe to make. (Click on the + by Recipes for Kids.)

Day 11
Bible
1. Read Luke 6:1-16.
2. Tell the story to someone.
3. How many of the twelve disciples can you name?
4. One of the disciples is Judas, the traitor. Jesus knew who was going to betray Him. But we
know that He loved Judas just like the others. When Jesus announced that one of them
would betray Him, they didn’t say, “It must be Judas.” They had no idea who it was. They
couldn’t tell by how Jesus had treated Judas.
History
1. Use the links on the left to learn about Greece.
2. Tell someone about what you learned.
Science
1. Read about another way plates can move and what can happen when they do. Keep
reading and clicking next. Stop after you read about tsunamis.
2. That list you saw is a list of today’s earthquakes!
3. View pictures from different strength earthquakes to see what they can do.
Music
1. Play the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra Game. Log in. Do the orchestra and
woodwinds pages. On the woodwind pages, listen to the different instruments. It shows
how low and how high they each play. This is called the instrument’s range. Then click on
quit.

Day 12
Bible
1. Read Luke 6:17-36.
2. What do you think is the hardest part of this Scripture to obey?
History
1. Label your map with Greece.
2. Find its time zone.
3. Find today’s weather.
4. Look up a phrase in Greek.
5. Greece’s currency is euros. How much is 100 dollars in euros?
6. Look at pictures of Greece.
7. What observations can you make about Greece from the pictures?
Science
1. Read again about earthquakes.
2. In what country and state is the San Andreas Fault?
3. What does it mean to the people living there that they are living on a fault
line? (answer: They can expect earthquakes.)

Day 13
Bible
1. Read Luke 6: 37-49.
2. What is the description of a wise person? (hint: verse 47) (answer: They listen to Jesus
and obey.)
3. What is the description of a foolish person? (hint: verse 49) (answer: They may call Jesus,
“Lord,” but they don’t obey Him; they aren’t really following Him.)
4. Are you wise or foolish?
History
1. Use the links to learn about Norway.
2. Tell someone about what you learned.
Science
1. Read about glaciers. (Young earth scientists view the earth as being between 6000 and
10,000 years old.)
2. Keep reading and watching and listening and clicking next until you read about the
Scablands in the state of Washington.
3. Tell someone how glaciers can form hills or other ways they can change a landscape–the
way the land is (flat, hilly, etc.).
Art
1. Observe the artwork of famous French artist, Chardin.
o What types of subjects did he paint?
o Did he make realistic paintings?
o Click on one and look at it up closer. What can you notice about colors? or about how
he drew light?

Day 14
Bible
1. Read Luke 7:1-17.
2. What did the centurion understand about Jesus? (answer: He had authority, the power to
command and demand.)
3. Lots of people must have died during the years that Jesus ministered. Why did He raise
this young man from the dead? (answer: He saw her and felt compassion. Her son was all
she had to support her and to take care of her.)
History
1. Label your map with Norway.
2. Find its time zone.
3. Find today’s weather.
4. Look up a phrase in Norwegian.
5. What is Norway’s currency? How much is 100 dollars in it?
