Dear Oglethorpe Student,
It is myhonor to introduce the 2004-05 Yamacraw. Thisbook stands
as testament to a tiny staffofdedicated students who take the time to
commemorate this year's shared experiences. Milestones throughout
—
the pastyear ranging from the Presidential election to OU's largest
—
freshman class represent the worldboth inside and outside the
''bubble/' and merit documentation for us and our successors.
Most importantly though for individuals, students will graduate. I
amproud ofthem and for them. These soon-to-be alumni committed
to OU in an uncertainworld scarredby economic and terrorist
trauma: they leave our school when it is healthy and moving
forward. Many students have contributed to make it so. I salute
the Upper Quad residents' tolerance ofconstruction; the new and
expanding programs in Theater and StudyAbroad; and a refocusing
on a dynamic athletic program. More improvements are on the way.
OUpromises to help students "Make a life. Make a living. Make a
difference." I trust that thisbookwill, in the passage oftime, link
you to memories where these aspirations were met.

The1942classicfilmCasablancawasonallourmindswhenwe
setthethemeofthe2005Yamacraw,"AsTimeGoesBy." Somethingin
thecharacters,intherootcausesandemotionsofthestory,captured
atruththatisbeyondcircumstanceorsetting. Myprimarygoalwas
toproducethebestyearbookpossible,tocapturetheeventsand
memoriesbothofindividualsandoftheuniversityasawhole. Atthe
sametime,however,Iwasconsciousofthehistoricalchangesthathave
shapedwhowearetodayandhowthosecapturedtruthspermeate
ourhistory. Iwasthinkingofallthechangesthatarehappeningon
thiscampus,administrativeturnover,professorsretiring,andnew
constructionprojects. Forthoseofuswhospendjustfouryearshere,thesechangesseemincredible.
Indeed,muchofwhathasoccurredthisyearwill,Ithink,provetobemomentousinthecourseofthe
University'shistory. WhatIwasmoreinterestedin,however,wasthelargerpicture. Whatthesong
"AsTimeGoesBy"tellsus,isthatnomatterwhatmaychange,therearestillcertainfundamentals
whichwillalwaysremain. Friendshipsarecemented,heartsarebroken,politicsprovesunavoidable,
andadustingofsnowmeritsapageineveryyearbookinGeorgia.

Thisiswhatitisliketoliveforadayinmyshoes. However,while
itwouldbeamusingtocontinuethistrainofthought,Bisellwantsthis
pagetobeslightlymoreformalandseriousinnature. Therefore,Iwillno
longerendeavortobewittyandcharmingandwillsimplystate,withan
airofformalityandseriousnessofpurpose,thatdespitethelonghours,my
workwithBisell,Ginny,andtherestoftheyearbookstaffhasbeenterribly
rewarding. Givenanotherfullyear,IhavetoadmitthatIwouldlikelysubmitmyselftotheprocessall
