ROBERT J. BARRETT is Professor of Psychiatry at the University
of Adelaide and Clinical Director of Psychiatric Services at the
Royal Adelaide Hospital. Both an anthropologist and a psychia
trist by training, he has an interest in the field of schizophrenia,
which he has pursued both in Australia and Borneo.
VIJAY K. BHATIA is a Professor at the City University of Hong
Kong. His research interests include discourse and genre analysis,
English for specific purposes, professional communication, espe
cially in the field of law, business, newspapers, advertising and
philanthropic fundraising. His book Analysing Genre-Language Use
in Professional Settings, published by Longman, is widely used by
scholars interested in the analysis of discourse.
CHRISTOPHER N. CANDLIN is Chair Professor of Applied Lin
guistics at the City University of Hong Kong, and was until recently
Professor of Linguistics and Executive Director of the Australian
National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research
(NCELTR) at Macquarie University, Sydney. His research and pub
lishing interests are in professional-client discourse, language and
literacy education and critical linguistics. Jle is currently President
of the International Association of Applied Linguistics.
YU-YING CHANG is a linguistics PhD candidate at the University of
Michigan. Her research interests include language for academic
purposes, contrastive rhetoric, computer-mediated communication,
sociolinguistics, and language in contact (multilingualism). She
has published in Applied Linguistics and the RELC Journal.
SANDRA GOLLIN is currently Head of the Learning Centre, Uni
versity of Western Sydney, Nepean. Her research and teaching
