Preface
This text is unlike other pediatric and child health nursing texts previously pub-
lished. Typically, many of the texts published for pediatric/child health nurses are
focused on nursing education texts for undergraduate and graduate level students.
Other nursing-related texts published for nurses who provide care to infants, chil-
dren, and adolescents and their families center on specialized areas of clinical prac-
tice such as pain, family-centered care, and developmental care. This text addresses
an area of practice that has not been addressed before—nurse-led models of care for
infants, children, adolescents, and families. This text provides readers with new
perspectives and insights about models of care that our international colleagues
from seven countries, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South
Africa, and the United States, have developed, implemented, and tested.
As the reader will note, these models of care have been developed by nurses with
differing practice backgrounds and levels of education as well as in collaboration
with interdisciplinary colleagues. As evidenced throughout this text, the regulatory
practice requirements differ internationally. In the United States, independent nurs-
ing practice referred to as full practice authority (FPA) is being implemented
throughout the country. FPA enables advanced practice nurses to enhance their
scope of practice to function independently to its fullest extent (ANA 2020; Bosse
et al. 2017; Stucky et al. 2020). The reader will find mention of independent practice
in some of the chapters. As the array of chapters in this text demonstrate, pervasive
and widespread opportunities exist for our colleagues who recognize service needs
of the infants, children, adolescents, and families that can be addressed uniquely
based upon a nursing model of care.
The models of care presented in this text share the commonality of being nurse-
led. However, each and every model presented in this text is uniquely different and
is representative of the diversity of care models possible for nursing development
and implementation. These models demonstrate the infinite possibilities that exist
for our nursing colleagues to move forward to think and act boldly to extend the
boundaries of accepted nursing practice. The presentations of the models of care
described in this text indicate the vision, creativity, determination, and professional-
ism of the nursing colleagues who undertook these efforts to create new and unique
nurse-led services for service populations in need.
Each of the nurse-led service model chapters is organized in a similar format for
readers to provide a thorough understanding and insights about each of these

programs. The Introduction provides an overview of the content that will be covered
in the chapter. In the section on Background Information, authors provide readers
with an overview of the need for the model. To do so, the authors describe the target
population and setting of the service model, which provide interesting details of the
uniqueness of each of the programs, particularly since this text has an international
focus. The authors share the impetus for development of their models and the pro-
cess undertaken to develop and implement the model/service. These are important
details to share as the reader will find that each nurse-led program undertook a
uniquely different approach that was influenced to a great deal by the population
served, the setting, resources, and culture. The theoretical frameworks of each of
these nurse-led programs are described as they shaped its development and
implementation.
One of the primary intents of this text was to provide readers with sufficient
detail about each of the nurse-led service models that would enhance program
development of other nurse-led models of care for the pediatric and adolescent pop-
ulation and their families. In the chapter section entitled, Description of the Nurse-
Led Model, these descriptions are shared with the purpose of inspiring other
pediatric/child health nursing colleagues to develop, implement, and test similar
and/or new models of nurse-led services. To that end, the authors provide descrip-
tions of the organizational components of the service model, detailed descriptions
of the services provided, and the setting wherein these services are provided. As
described in this text, the service models are located in a variety of clinical and
community-based settings that demonstrate the fluidity of nursing practice.
Descriptions of the nursing and interdisciplinary team members involved with the
provision of services and support are identified as well as their roles and responsi-
bilities as well as the position requirements for staffing support. Readers will find
useful information about the methods of evaluation that were used as depending on
the service purposes, population served, setting, staffing and resources available;
there is a wide variety of methods used for evaluation.
These nursing experts provide their unique expertise and experience with imple-
menting these nurse-led services in the section entitled, Challenges and Facilitators.
Authors share candidly with readers the challenges faced in the development and
implementation of this nurse-led model. Facilitators that enabled this program to be
implemented are presented as well, which are relevant and important considerations
for service model development (i.e., administrative support). Issues of sustainability
are addressed that include the issues associated with financing and reimbursement.
In the sections, Service Adjustments and Lessons Learned, the authors share their
candid appraisal of their program development efforts. That is, the modifications
that were needed to make the program more effective are presented. The authors
provide advice to colleagues as to what was learned to make the program more
effective and feasible. Based upon their service model development, the authors
share their future plans in the section entitled, Future Implications for Clinical
Practice and Research. Each of the chapters conclude with a presentation of Useful
Resources that include websites, social media, and educational materials.

Other chapters in the text intersect with the descriptions of the nurse-led model
of care chapters. One of the chapters, authored by Dr. Eanes, provides a theoretical
lens, based on the Urie Bronfenbrenner Social-Ecological Theory (1977) upon
which nurse-led initiatives can be developed that are focused on the needs of disad-
vantaged pediatric and adolescent populations. One of the chapters provides
decades-long perspectives pertaining to the lessons learned with the involvement of
nurse-led service models focused on the needs of adolescents and young adults with
long-term conditions. The introductory chapter provides an overview of all the
chapters in the text. The concluding chapter presents a summary and analyses of the
nurse-led programs found in this text.
It is hoped that nurses and our interdisciplinary colleagues who read this text will
be inspired to create new nurse-led models of care in their own practice settings
whether in traditional clinical sites or in community-based settings. The worldwide
nurse-led models of care demonstrate the robustness of innovative nursing practice
that exists and will continue to evolve and grow to address healthcare needs of
infants, children, adolescents, and their families.

Introduction
This text offers the reader with a unique and often overlooked perspective on nurse-
led services and programs that have been developed for infants, children, youth, and
their families. Most clinically focused nursing texts, particularly those who that are
written for pediatric/paediatric and child health nurses and practitioners focus on
health-care issues based upon more well-known traditional models of nursing care.
This text is different from traditional perspectives of pediatric/paediatric and child
health nursing practice. The chapters of this text offer a diverse range of nurse-led
clinical programs and services in hospital-based and community-based settings. As
the reader will note, these models of care are representative of the scope of nursing
practice worldwide, which varies based upon institutional, regulatory, community,
and cultural needs.
This text is focused on providing readers with international exemplars of nurse-
led/nurse-directed pediatric/paediatric and child health models of care. These mod-
els are representative of the broad scope of pediatric/paediatric and child health
nursing practice that exists in clinical and community-based settings. The nurse-led
models of care featured in this textbook address the divergent needs of infants, chil-
dren, youth, and their families across the health-illness continuum of care. The
nurse-led models presented in this text focus on approaches developed and imple-
mented by pediatric/paediatric and child health nurses for infants, children, and
youth who have health-care needs ranging from preventive to acute care.
The purpose of this text is to provide exemplars of innovative and forward-
thinking models of nursing care that can be adapted/replicated in other clinical and
