Farhad Dalal has written a tough, exciting book. He makes a radical, critical and
appreciative scrutiny at the corpus of group analytical theory found in the
writings of S.H. Foulkes and of his close collaborator James Anthony. Inevitably
hefindstheillogicalitiesandinconsistenciesthatappearinanytheoreticalsystem
when exposed to this close scrutiny, but he does so appreciatively. He recognises
theoriginalityandtheimportanceofFoulkes’visionandintendstomakeusaware
of its reach, to see where Foulkes falls short in his intention to create a
socially-based theory of the person distinct from, yet related to, psychoanalysis,
which together with dynamic neurology, Gestalt psychology and the historical
sociology of Norbert Elias were his basic allegiances.
Dalalwriteswithadmirableclarity;helookscloselyatFreud’sdevelopmental,
structuralandsocialtheories,thensimilarlyatFoulkes’.HisexpositionofNorbert
Elias is original; no previous psychotherapeutic text has given such attention to
the radical and impressive corpus of Elias’ writings. Elias is difficult to read,
particularlyforpsychotherapistsashisthinkingissociological,philosophicaland
historical.Hisideashavegainedgroundinsociologybutnotyetinpsychotherapy,
either group or individual. Dalal has rendered an essential service enabling us to
appreciate the grandeur of Elias’ vision.
Groupanalystshavealwaysknownthatourtheoryrepresentsaninterweaving
ofFoulkes’psychoanalysisandElias’sociology.Nowforthefirsttime,apartfrom
articles that have appeared in GroupAnalysis, we can read a detailed authoritative
exposition of Elias’ opus. Students, by which I mean teachers and learners both,
have the opportunity to examine the theoretical basis of group analysis.
Farhad Dalal tackles difficult subjects with enthusiasm and a deft touch:
structuralism, Matte-Blanco, modern socio-biology, communication and
discoursetheory.Hewritesclearlyandauthoritatively.Hisfinalchapter,‘Elements
of a post-Foulkesian group analytic theory’, is a notable essay in integration and
anticipation.
Itisgratifyingtobetheeditorofaseriesofgroupanalyticbooksthatcannow
give evidence to the new generation of scholars and practitioners who devote
considerable powers of criticism and exposition to group analytic theory. Morris
Nitsun’s Anti-Group book has received wide attention – I do not doubt that
Farhad Dalal’s work will be widely read, discussed and appreciated.
