Didn’t women have their war as well?
The notion of ‘women’s writing’ during the First World War is still often seen as a
contradiction in terms. The conflict, the story goes, was a masculine domain: as women
did not fight, they were necessarily excluded from the experience of war.
This bibliography challenges that view by listing and annotating hundreds of
published and unpublished books, articles, memoirs, diaries and letters written by
women during and after the First World War. Included are:

(cid:127) Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, G.B.Stern, Brenda Girvin, Vera Britain,
Storm Jameson, Rose Macaulay and Berta Ruck

(cid:127) literary, cultural and historical criticism
(cid:127) archival material.

An invaluable resource for both researchers and the general reader, this is the first
detailed bibliography of its kind, providing a vast range of reference to, and
commentary on, both the larger (political, science) issues of the war and its more
localised topics (the Serbian Front, peace organisations). ‘Experience of war’, we
quickly learn is not the exclusive province of the fighting man.
