Foreword
Women Confront Cancer drives home a powerful, deeply resonant message: Women can and are changing the realities of their cancer diagnoses and treatment. And 
as we create these new realities, we are healing on deeper levels. Our healing involves the emotional and spiritual, not only the physical dimension. The healing journeys 
documented herein involve personal changes that cannot fail to have sweeping consequences.
In our struggle to overcome cancer, we must continually confront the strict limitations of conventional cancer treatment modalities—surgery, chemotherapy, radiation. 
While these treatments may benefit, they may also harm. While they kill cancer cells, they undoubtedly weaken and undermine our immune response. We have had to 
make choices—whether to rely on conventional therapies, which ones to embrace and how best to combine them with a host of alternative/complementary 
treatments—all without enough information. As we strive to know as much as we can—to understand pathology reports, to grasp the applicability of various 
treatments and procedures to our individual cases, to take into account long­term effects of treatments, to discern recurrence from survival data, and to look at the 
probabilities and procedures from all angles, making use of all available data—we also acknowledge that not only is our information limited, but that each of us is a 
unique individual with unpredictable responses, walking a path that is ours alone.
"First, do no harm." But how to define "harm"? Most of us believe women have a right to be informed of all available treatments and to have appropriate access to 
them. Yet, the lack of knowledge and interest of conventional M.D.'s in nutrition and other alternate cancer treatments is obvious. While it is profoundly intimidating to 
go up against the medical establishment when we are newly diagnosed and vulnerable, at a time when we are especially in need of reassurance in the form of a skilled

physician's recommendations, sometimes we must do exactly that. We must beware of opinion masquerading as fact; we must demand a more humane medical 
profession that does not lay claim to information that it does not possess, one that does not put undue pressure on women to choose conventional treatments of 
questionable benefit, that does not misinform or obfuscate with confusing terminologies, that does not use fear to motivate choices in therapies, that validates a 
woman's decision­making process, and that, first, does no harm.
It is a question not only of raising more money for research but of steering the research in the right direction. Attention must be given to treatment trials comparing 
conventional treatments with nontoxic treatments. The effects of nutrition, supplements, mind­body techniques, acupuncture, homeopathy, and chiropractics must be 
further explored. We need to recognize the powerful effects of environmental toxins and psychological stress, in its various forms, on the development of cancer. And 
we must be attentive to the existence of a powerful cancer industry that profits more from cancer treatment than from cancer prevention and cancer cures.
Despite all these difficulties, many of us talk about cancer as a journey of empowerment. To choose is to exercise power, and this volume rings with the voices of the 
sick and powerful, the healing and the whole. These voices speak of the therapeutic effects of hope, of personal responsibility, of community, support systems, intuitive 
guidance, and dream work, and of finding the rituals that give us pleasure. Susan Moss says that she always gets a second opinion, and "the second opinion is always 
my opinion."
Healing from cancer requires a tremendous commitment, and I am inspired by the spirit that moves the women who have contributed to this volume. We all face 
cancer together, and together we can weave straw into gold. We are courageous women, each in our own way venturing to go where no one has traveled before.

The current volume is part of a larger research project that involves interviewing sixty people who in some way can be said to be opinion leaders in the alternative 
cancer therapy field. About two dozen interviews involve clinicians, researchers, and the heads of referral organizations; those results will be published in the 
companion volume to this one, Evaluating Alternative Cancer Therapies (1999). The remaining interviews involve discussions with women patients who have used 
alternative therapies, primarily for breast cancer (this book), and men patients who have used alternative therapies for prostate cancer (another planned volume).
This book does not recommend any therapies, doctors, or institutions, and under no circumstances is the information presented here intended as medical advice for 
individual patients. It is dangerous to attempt to self­medicate, even with food supplements, herbs, or dietary programs. Readers are urged to consult a qualified health 
care professional for any medical problem and to make decisions under medical supervision. This is particularly true for cancer, which ideally requires individualized 
treatment programs. Some of the therapeutic modalities mentioned herein may be contraindicated for some individuals in some programs of treatment.

Introduction
The women in this book are current or former cancer patients. Their stories are gripping. Much more important, however, is the biopolitical message they convey. This 
group stands out from the millions of other women in North America who are living with cancer or the fear of its recurrence. These women are opinion leaders in the 
movement to open up conventional medicine to the possibilities of nontoxic alternatives. They have assumed an active role as authors of books, support persons for 
other cancer patients, or public speakers and community resource leaders. Together they represent a selection of the women leaders who are exploring potential 
therapies beyond the limitations of conventional treatments.
The women have faced a range of different cancers and different experiences, and they maintain different opinions. Some, such as Sharon Batt, are very cautious about 
the use of alternative and complementary cancer therapies (ACCTs). Others are strongly opposed to chemotherapy, radiation, and, in a few cases, surgery as well. 
Many of the women are vocal advocates of ACCTs. Most of them advocate a middle ground where patients have the right to make choices from both conventional 
therapies and ACCTs. If there is a common ground among all the women in this book, it is the recognition that cancer patients need to have better information and 
more options than are currently offered.
We interpret the interviews of these women not as medical case studies but as political documents in the struggle for women's increased control over their bodies and 
the availability of diagnostic and therapeutic options. By far one of the dominant political issues involving women and cancer is breast cancer politics. Although some of 
the women in this book were not diagnosed with breast cancer, we believe that the experiences of all the women point to valuable lessons for breast cancer activism as 
well as women's health care activism in general. Women have been quite suc­
