Goals
Welcometoanintroductiontoscientificworkingtechniquesandtosomeofthe
softwarepackagesthatyourCSfacultyusefortheirownscientificwork! Wewill
explainhow“science”works,whatscientificliteratureisandhowitcanbefound,we
willtalkaboutthetheoryandpracticeofgivingscientificpresentations,andwewill
discusssoftwarepackagesfor
preparingadvancedscientificdocumentsandslidesforpresentations,
draftingfigures,plots,andsimilarillustrations,
manipulatingmathematicalformulae.
Theoverallgoalofthislectureistofamiliarizeyouwithscientificworkingandsoftware
packagesforscientificworkingtosuchanextentthat
you’llgainanunderstandingoftheprosandconsofthosepackages,andknow
whichpackagetouseinordertoaccomplishaspecifictask,
you’llbeabletousethosepackagesforaccomplishingsimpletaskswithout
consultingmanualsrepeatedly,
andthat
you’lllearnwheretofindadditionalinformationandhelpifneeded.
Itisoursincerehopethatthiswillhelpyouwithdoingtheworkmoreeffectivelythatis
neededforyourstudies.

foundthemusefulforourownscientificwork. Allpackagesdiscussedarefreely
available(forstudents)andcanbeinstalledonanyPCrunningLinux. (Someofthem
