Obituary - Karen L. Eikmeier
October 24, 1937 - December 11, 2012
Karen L. Eikmeier, 75, Flandreau. They moved to the Eikmeier family farm where
passed away December 11, she raised their family. Her husband preceded her in death
2012 at Riverview Health on December 24, 2010.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband Glen, parents
and an infant sister.

It’s Our History

Recently Dusty Martin donated two fireproof file cabinets that he was no longer using to the Minnesota Angus
Association. These file cabinets looked a little distressed, and are very heavy. I wasn’t excited to add these to my
already over-filled office. My house is a little bursting at the seams. If one of the kids would finally take that piano, the
office might be a little more user friendly. But the file cabinet we did have from the Association was also exploding
with information and there were those three boxes in my attic that needed to be someplace safer. Jim cleaned up the
cabinets, sanded them down and painted them. They really don’t look to bad and the office got rearranged, so we
each have our own space and the piano even fits. Thanks Dusty.
What is really interesting is Jim went through all of the files, sorted and moved things around so that all of the
Association history is now stored safely in these fire proof file cabinets. In doing so, we came across some interesting
documents, pictures, sale catalogs and posters. Did you know that the Association used to do two sales each year, at
different locations? These records go back to 1920.
It has been interesting to review some of the information. For example, the Minnesota Aberdeen Angus Sale
was held March 17-19, 1920 at the Sale Pavilion Union Stock Yards South Saint Paul. There were 89 head sold for
an average of $182.00. The sale used neck chains to identify the individual lots. I suppose 3M had not invented
tape yet, and of course there were not rubber ear tags. The top bull at the 1920 sale was lot 30, Protector E 195462.
His pedigree is still in the registry and lists his date of birth as April 11, 1914. This bull was consigned by Hiram E.
Hansen of Mapleton and William Sharp of Amboy. The bull placed first in the show before the sale and received a
$7.00 prize. The bull was sold to C. G. McEwen of Buffalo Lake, Minn., for $600.00.

Ten Years of Directories
Ten years ago the Minnesota Angus Association
changed the format for the Annual Directory, changing
from a map layout out to the 11” x 4” booklet that fits
conveniently into everyone’s back pocket.
Over the past ten years, the directory has generated
thousands for the Association. Many of the 25 original
advertisers continue to advertise in the directory each year.
The directory is distributed by direct mail to farmers and
ranchers in and around Minnesota. It is made available at
the State Fair, Beef Expo and given to attendees at the U of
M Cow-Calf Days.
The directory may be ten years old, but the costs for
ads have not changed. A full page ad is $400, a half page
