BSTRACT
Modern fully integrated receiver architectures, require inductorless circuits to
achievetheirpotentiallowarea,lowcost,andlowpower.Thelownoiseamplifier
(LNA),whichisakeyblockinsuchreceivers,isinvestigatedinthisthesis.
LNAs canbe either narrowband or wideband.Narrowband LNAs use induc-
tors and have very low noise figure, but they occupy a large area and require a
technologywithRFoptionstoobtaininductorswithhighQ.Recently,wideband
LNAswithnoiseanddistortioncancelling,withpassiveloadshavebeenproposed,
whichcanhavelowNF,buthavehighpowerconsumption.Inthisthesisthemain
goalistoobtainaverylowarea,lowpower,andlow-costwidebandLNA.
First,itisinvestigatedabalunLNAwithnoiseanddistortioncancellingwith
active loads to boost the gain and reduce the noise figure (NF). The circuit is
basedonaconventionalbalunLNAwithnoiseanddistortioncancellation,using
the combination of a common-gate (CG) stage and common-source (CS) stage.
Simulation and measurements results, with a 130 nm CMOS technology, show
thatthegainisenhancedbyabout3dBandtheNFisreducedbyatleast0.5dB,
with a negligible impact on the circuit linearity (IIP3 is about 0 dBm). The total
powerdissipationisonly4.8mW,andtheactiveareaislessthan50x50µm2 .
It is also investigated a balun LNA in which the gain is boosted by using a
doublefeedbackstructure.Weproposetoreplacetheloadresistorsbyactiveloads,
whichcanbeusedtoimplementlocalfeedbackloops(intheCGandCSstages).
This will boost the gain and reduce the noise figure (NF). Simulation results, with
the same 130 nm CMOS technology as above, show that the gain is 24 dB and
NF isless than2.7 dB.The totalpower dissipation isonly 5.4mW (sinceno extra
blocksare required),leadingto afigure-of-merit(FoM) of3.8mW−1,using 1.2V

ThetwoLNAapproachesproposedinthisthesisarevalidatedbysimulation
andbymeasurementresults,andareincludedinareceiverfront-endforbiomed-
ical applications (ISM and WMTS), as an example; however, they have a wider
rangeofapplications.

Asarquitecturasmodernasdereceptorescompletamentedesenvolvidosemcir-
cuitos integrados, necessitam de circuitos sem bobinas para que as suas poten-
cialidadesdebaixocusto,áreareduzidaebaixoconsumodeenergiapossamser
atingidos.Oamplificadordebaixoruído(LNA),queéumcircuitoessencialnestes
receptores,éinvestigadonestatese.
OLNApodeserclassificadoquantoàsualarguradebanda,nomeadamente,
debandaestreitaoudebandalarga.OsLNAsdebandaestreitausambobinase
têmgeralmenteumfactorderuído(NF)muitobaixo,masocupamumagrande
área e é imperativo que o seu fabrico seja realizado com uma tecnologia com
opçõesdeRFparaobterbobinascomaltofactordequalidade(Q)oqueencarece
aindamais oprocesso.Recentemente, têmsido propostos circuitosparaLNAs de
banda larga, comcancelamento de ruído edistorção, utilizando cargas passivas
(i.e.,resistências),queconseguematingirumfactorderuídobaixo,no entanto à
custadepotênciasmaiselevadas.
O objectivo principal desta tese é o projecto e desenvolvimento de um LNA
debandalarga,combaixoconsumodeenergia,deáreamuitoreduzidaeconse-
quentementecomumbaixocustodeprodução.
Numa primeira fase é investigado um LNA, com cancelamento de ruído e
distorção,comrecursoacargasactivasparaaumentaroganhoereduzirofactorde
ruído.OcircuitoébaseadonumLNAcomcancelamentoderuídoedistorção,que
utilizaumaarquitecturajábemconhecidanaliteraturaequeutilizaacombinação
deumandardeportacomum(CG)eumoutrodefontecomum(CS).
Os resultados de simulação e medições efectuadas aos circuitos projectados
emtecnologiaCMOSde130nm,mostramqueoganhoéaumentadoemcercade

Numa segunda fase, é investigado um LNA em que o ganho é ainda mais
elevado,atravésdautilizaçãodeumaestruturaderealimentaçãodupla.Asubstitu-
içãoderesistênciasporcargasactivas,permiteaimplementaçãoderealimentação
local, através da injecção de sinal na porta dos transístores usados como carga
activa. Isto permitirá aumentar ainda mais o ganho e reduzir o factor de ruído
(NF).
Os resultadosde simulação, para a mesma tecnologia CMOS de 130 nm previ-
amente mencionada, mostram que o ganho é de 24 dB e NF é inferior 2,7 dB na
bandadefrequênciasdeoperação.Adissipaçãodepotênciatotalédeapenas5,4
mW(semrecursoacircuitosauxiliaresexternosdepolarização),oquesetraduz
numafigurademéritode3,8mW−1,paraumatensãodealimentaçãode1,2V.
As duas abordagens propostas nesta tese para a realização dos LNAs são
validadasporsimulação emediçãodosprotótiposimplementados.Oscircuitos
propostosforamincluídosnoprojectodeumreceptorsem-fiosparabandalarga
coma finalidadede podervir aserutilizado emaplicações biomédicas(bandas
ISMeWMTS),noentanto,podeserutilizadoemumavastagamadeaplicações.
