Chapter One
“Fuck.” That was the right word. “Fuck this.” Zack relished the way the words filled
his empty apartment. He stared at his laptop’s screen and marvelled at how the simple
arrangement of letters could create the sensation of a kick in the gut.
He shouldn’t have been surprised to find Colleen Madison’s name on the list of the
fertility clinic’s clients who were willing to be contacted for an interview. Well, well, so the
Madisons had eventually gone to professional donors.
Good to see outside confirmation that his own donation to Colleen and Tyler’s breeding
efforts hadn’t taken. Thank God for little blessings—or lack of them.
Zack clicked from the page to a blank screen. He’d email a pitch to everyone on the list
except the Madisons, and he began typing a bland note requesting an interview. The feature
assignment struck him as pure fluff, not his favourite sort of story, but he needed the money
and this magazine paid well.
Dear Parent, he began, then sat back in his chair and stared at nothing—and saw the
gorgeous Colleen.
When he’d met her, all three of them had been in college and she’d been Tyler’s
girlfriend. Zack had been taking British Literature that semester and had decided her quiet
beauty belonged in another century.
She wasn’t like other women. Even the way she’d pulled up her brown hair and
attached it to the back of her head with a complex arrangement of pins was different, old
fashioned. The pile of hair looked right with her pale skin, small rosebud mouth, and delicate
features. Apparently he had some desire to bang a Victorian because back then he’d get hard

still bug him.

He returned to the email with the list of names. Her phone number was local. Funny,
he’d thought they’d moved. Maybe he should just see what they’d say…No, he was not
interested in calling.
He pushed back the chair and went into the kitchen. Rummaging around the fridge, he

at the gym. Tyler had never been Zack’s favourite human—they had been on the college
hockey team together—but he’d been glad to see a familiar face and they’d talked as they’d
worked out.
After that, the three of them had gone out for dinner occasionally. Wolfing down pizza,
Zack and Tyler had talked a lot about nothing in particular, sports, cars, sports cars, the usual
entertaining but insignificant shit. Colleen had contributed the occasional quiet, dead-on
remark.
At the gym, Tyler had soon become chummier. He’d creeped Zack out with all the
questions about his sex life and health—until Zack had demanded to know why the hell
Tyler wanted to know about his last AIDS test.
That’s when the man had let it spill.
Colleen had wanted Zack. And Tyler hadn’t minded his wife trying Zack out. No
threesome action, Tyler had assured him. Just Zack and Colleen and they had his blessing to
go bareback. As long as Zack showed him a clean bill of health.
He’d done it—he’d been stupid and horny enough to get a lab report from his goddamn

He finished the seltzer and decided to go for a run. Maybe he’d do some editing on a

He let himself out of the duplex and started a slow easy jog that should let him go at
least ten miles. Slow burn was always better. But even after he hit the high school track,
Colleen remained stuck in his head. The old anger and amusement came back full-force
when he thought of that night.
It had started out strange and gotten stranger. At very least, the Madisons could have
turned on soft music or fed him before they’d gotten what they’d wanted from him. Not that
he’d needed any bribes. It was enough that Tyler had invited him over and had made it clear
that Zack would get lucky. Zack would get to nail the woman of his dreams.
Yeah, that’s just how he’d thought of it, too. Nailing her. He’d been Mr. Maturity back
then. He’d had two beers to help him with his first big adventure as a Don Juan, screwing
another man’s wife with no latex to blunt the heat and sensation of Colleen.
Tyler had met him at the door and he’d given Zack a handshake that would have hurt
like hell if he hadn’t promptly squeezed back. That was Tyler’s style—always competitive.
Hyper-testosterone. They’d sat around in the tastefully decorated living room, drinking beer
and making desultory conversation about hockey. After downing beer, he’d gathered the
courage to ask, “Where’s Colleen?”
“She’s waiting for you, Sport. Go get her.”
He’d slowly climbed the stairs. Tyler had followed right behind, and the skin on Zack’s
back crept but he hadn’t said a word.
He should have been more alert to the extreme weirdness when he’d caught sight of
her. She’d been dressed only in a T-shirt and lay on her back on the bed, knees up, as rigid as
a patient on a doctor’s table.

next to the bed. He’d been examining her, but when the only light came from the hall, he
could barely make out her shape.
He wanted to protest but her next words stopped him. “Come on,” she whispered. “It’s

He leaned over and whispered, “Really? What about Tyler?” It felt totally weird having
the man there.
Tyler had heard him. “It’s okay, guy,” he said in a regular voice that boomed through
the dark room.
Zack didn’t want to appear uptight. He could be cool about this. Better than sneaking
around behind the husband’s back, Zack told himself. And the dark would hide the details.
He stripped naked, then, slipped onto the bed next to her, gathered her slender body in
his arms and began hungrily kissing her mouth. She twisted her face away with a tiny
protesting sigh.
“All right if I touch you?” he whispered.
“Yes. Please.”
Okay, fine. He didn’t think he was such a bad kisser, but hell, at least she let him caress
