How to reach Faculdade de Medicina Veterinaria
By bus
Faculdade de Medicina Veterinaria (FMV) is located in the Polo Universitário do Alto da Ajuda ,
and you may reach it taking the following buses:
• Bus 723 – Desterro – Algés;
• Bus 729 – Algés – Bairro Padre Cruz;
• Bus 760 – Gomes Freire – Cemitério da Ajuda;
• Bus 742 – B. Madre de Deus – Universidade da Ajuda. Please notice that this bus may end
in two different locations (Casalinho Ajuda and Universidade da Ajuda). You must catch the
bus to B. Madre de Deus – Universidade da Ajuda.
By underground
• Blue line to Marquês de Pombal Station. Then catch Bus 723 (direction Algés);
• Blue line to Pontinha, Carnide or Colégio Militar Stations. Then catch Bus 729 (direction
Algés);
• Red line to São Sebastião Station. Then catch Bus 742 (direction Universidade Ajuda);
• Green line to Martim Moniz, Rossio or Cais do Sodré Stations. Then catch Bus 760 (direction
Cemitério da Ajuda).
From the airport
From the airport, you may reach FMV by taking the underground and/or buses:
• Underground: Red line from airport to São Sebastião. Then catch Bus 742 (direction
Universidade Ajuda).
• Bus 708: Parque Nações Norte to Martim Moniz. Then catch Bus 760 (direction Cemitério
da Ajuda).
• Bus 744: Moscavide to Marquês Pombal. Then catch Bus 723 (direction Algés).
• Bus 783: Portela/Prior Velho to Amoreiras. Then catch Bus 723 (direction Algés).
From Oriente train station
You have two ways of going from Oriente station to FMV:
• By underground (easiest way): Red Line from Oriente to São Sebastião. Then, you must catch
Bus 742 to Universidade Ajuda.
On weekends, you only have Bus 742 available ending on Casalinho Ajuda. Follow the
instructions above for this bus.
• By train: catch the train to Alcântara-Terra (this train is available only during the week). Then,
you must catch Bus 742 to Universidade Ajuda.

When vectors collide with cultures: ‘anthropo-vector
ecology’, who is controlling who?
Dear conference attendees,
On behalf of the European Society for Vector Ecology it is my great pleasure to welcome you
all in Lisbon!
This city with its beautiful colours, amazing food, warming people, music, art and culture is going
to host our conference for the second time since 1998. I hope you will enjoy your stay and have
also the time to get a bit of the vibrant life and energy that is the soul of this incredible city.
The European Region of Society for Vector Ecology has a very important role in getting together
scientists form various disciplines with the a common goal of enhancing research, control,
dissemination of information and to develop new strategies on vectors and vector-borne
diseases. It is very encouraging to see the contributions of well renowned scientists from
more than 40 worldwide countries at this conference. I am also very happy to report that our
networking of scientists is continually expanding throughout our global community and thus
affording all of us new opportunities of collaborations.
These past decades have played an enormous role in discovering new aspects on vector
ecology, genetic and genomics of vectors and pathogens they transmit advance technologies
on vector control, impact of climate changes, pancontinental vector dispersal and many others.
Moreover, the development of new tools for vector surveillance and control is also contributing
to the reduction of vector populations and pathogen transmission. The scientific community
is also casting light on the importance of defining gaps and needs in medical and veterinary
entomology via collaborative projects on a global basis, therefore strengthening our networking
activities. But what about the role of social science, anthropology, communication and many
other disciplines? How do these factors interact with our fight against vectors? Are vector
treatments by professionals in the field more sustainable than citizen participation? Are we using
the right language and message to engage communities with science affecting our daily lives?
It was my concern for this year to draw attention to the impact and importance of vectors
and vector-borne diseases on landscapes inhabited by human beings and how to make this
paradigm most effective to benefit public health. I hope this will help us to re-think about the
way we communicate our knowledge, achievements, preventative measures towards vector-
borne diseases so that ‘non-scientists’ will also be able to understand and contribute to their
sustainability.

Last but not least, let me express my best appreciation to the local organizing committee for
their incredible support and help to make sure that we can deliver a great science during our
stay in Lisbon. A very big thanks also goes to all the E-SOVE members and mentors for their
continuing support.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the participants of the 20th E-SOVE
conference, without you we could have not make such an outstanding meeting.
Thank you for your continuous support to our society and for the great contributes to successful
science, enjoy the conference!
