Table Of ContentWe’ve finished our first term already and how time has flown! It’s been a very productive few
months and our students have achieved such a lot! I hope you enjoy reading the Christmas Edition of
the TAN and will see just how many truly talented students we have at The Albany.
Our Year 7 students have settled in very well indeed under the expert leadership of Mr. Veares, and
our Year 11 students have now completed their mocks. Mrs. Clarke has really motivated them all
term, and to help them revise thoroughly she commissioned Tim Foot for 2 days to deliver his
revision techniques workshops. We’re looking forward to analysing the mock exam results, and will
push on next term to ensure all the students are well prepared for their exam season in the summer.
Years 9 and 10 have started their GCSE courses well and are showing real promise in terms of
achieving their targets. They are focussed in lessons and are making very good progress in all areas.
Ms. Abbott and Mr. Bailey have ensured that all students are well behaved and working hard, and
they will continue to support them over these next few years as they grow into young adults.
Year 8 are going to choose their options next term and we’ll explain the process to them, and help
them with their choices in February and March 2017. Ms. Down has been instrumental in ensuring
that all students are in the correct band, and she will be making sure they are advised individually on
their option choices.
We have two members of staff who are moving on to pastures new in January; Mr. Godfrey and Miss
Green. We wish them every success, and thank them for their contribution to The Albany over the
years.
I am very proud of the students and staff at The Albany and am looking forward to our continued
success next term. The school is going from strength to strength and I will continue to keep you up to
date on all our initiatives and foci as we unfold them over the spring term.
I’ll be sending you a letter outlining our new procedures for improving punctuality, and for developing
homework standards shortly. I very much value your support in all of these areas, and look forward to
next term greatly.
In the meantime, I wish you a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas and New Year, and a prosperous and
healthy 2017. Val Masson

This half term we organised a quiz to battle the

students. Ultimately our top three teams on the
day were all Year 8 teams but the Year 7s gave a
valiant effort and I am sure they will turn the
tables at the next quiz showdown.

The symptoms of MS vary widely from person to person and can affect any part of the body.
The main symptoms include:
fatigue
difficulty walking
vision problems, such as blurred vision
problems controlling the bladder
numbness or tingling in different parts of the body
muscle stiffness and spasms
problems with balance and co-ordination problems with thinking, learning and planning
The MS Society is a community of people living with MS, scientists, campaigners, volunteers and
fundraisers. They understand what life’s like with MS, and support each other through the highs, lows
and everything in between. They are driving research into more and better treatments. They offer
useful advice, publications, news items about ongoing research, blogs and chatrooms. They can be very
useful if you, or someone you know, has just been diagnosed with MS.

Life Skills
Year 8 are taking part in a new lesson this year which helps them to develop a number of different
skills that will help them now and in later life.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, Year 8 are working on a project organised by First Give to try
and win £1000 for the charity of their choice. The pupils work in groups to research, visit and pre-
sent their reason why a charity deserves the money. The charity must be local and deal with a social
issue in their area. The pupils have made some great presentations and learnt some valuable skills
on how to work on a project and present their ideas and views.
