The downfall of Baji Rao Peshwa
and the acquisition by the Govern­
Wettern ment of Bombay of the districts
around Poona marked the emergence
of the Britisli as the dominant
power in India. Hinduism flourished
India in this region to a far greater extent
than in the rest of the country, hence
the problems facing the British ad­
ministrators of Maharashtra were
quite different from those confronting

Ravinder Kumar was educated at the
Punjab University, Chandigarh,
where he took his M.A. in modern
Indian history. He was then awarded
a research scholarship by the
Australian National University,
Canberra, and took his Ph.D. there in
1964. He was appointed a lecturer
in the Department of History of tlTe
Punjab University, and in 1968
became a Fellow in the Department
of History of the Australian National
University.
