Introduction to GCSE Music
• GCSE Music helps students to develop subject knowledge, understanding and skills, through
listening to a variety of music, playing music and creating their own music.
• The specification places a strong weighting on practical aspects of music (70 per cent), with
choices catering for a wide range of interests and abilities. This four-unit GCSE assesses
students' skills in listening and appraising, composing and performing music.
• GCSE Music offers a solid foundation for progression to other music studies, including A-level
Music, and often to a music-related career. Our course provides the opportunity for students to
develop valuable transferable skills such as self-confidence, concentration, creativity, evaluation
and team work.

Unit 1 (42701): Listening to and Appraising Music 1 hour exam
The audio excerpts are on a CD which lasts for the whole exam. Teachers’ Notes providing instructions on the conduct of the
exam are available in advance of the exam.

Unit 2 (42702): Composing and Appraising Music
This is externally assessed coursework. You must send the composition, recording, appraisal booklet and Candidate Record
Form to the examiner by 7 May in the year of entry.
The appraisal booklet is on the website and AQA will send hard copies in response to estimated entries.

Unit 3 (42703): Performing Music
This unit is Controlled Assessment marked by the teacher. Candidates’ performances must be recorded on CD and
accompanied by scores of the music performed. The submission date is 7 May in the year of entry.

Unit 4 (42704) Composing Music
This unit is Controlled Assessment marked by the teacher. You must submit candidates’ compositions in the form of a recording
on CD with a score. The submission date is 7 May in the year of entry.

Administration

• Entries: find everything you need to know on our website.

• Estimated entries: it is important to tell us how many students you are planning to enter as some advance materials are
sent on the basis of this information.

• Controlled assessment (unit 3 and unit 4): find out how the moderation process works, the documentation that needs to
be completed, and where to send this information.

• GCSE Music administration: download the forms you need to complete from our webpage or complete the relevant forms
online.
• Candidate Record Forms (CRF) for units 2, 3 and 4.
• Centre Declaration sheet for units 3 and 4.
These forms are also sent in hard copy.

• Supervision of work for the practical (units 2, 3 and 4): find what you need to know in our controlled assessment leaflet.

• secure key materials – get support documents and exam-related materials for you and your students (including past
papers, mark schemes, reports on examination, exemplar materials)
• Enhanced Results Analysis – see how your school, subject, class, individual students have performed
• results – view and print your school’s exam results for the latest, and previous, exam series
• special consideration – apply for special consideration if a student is disadvantaged or absent from an exam
• post-results services – request access to scripts and review of marking
• Teacher online standardisation (TOLS) – access the latest teacher standardisation material for unit 4.
