dictionary to include both frequency diamonds (♦ to ♦♦♦) and HSK levels (1

designed to be used with Adobe® Acrobat Reader and
compatible PDF viewers.

The Websters Digital Chinese Dictionary arranges all entries by Pinyin tone numbers. To
encourage learners of Chinese, words with similar pronunciations are adjacent. For
example, ai1 (first tone) are grouped together, then ai2 (second tone) are grouped
together.
A. Simplified Chinese. Most common form used in modern China
B. Traditional Chinese. Found in Hong Kong and Taiwan*
C. Pinyin with tone marks. Pinyin is the most common system for transcribing
Mandarin
D. Pinyin with tone numbers
E. Bopomofo or zhuyin fuhao, a phonetic system common in Taiwan*
F. Word frequency diamonds. The most common single character words in both
classical and modern Chinese have 3 diamonds (♦♦♦). The most popular 12,000
single character words have at least 1 diamond. Multi-character words are not
ranked.
G. HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) level corresponding to the Modern Chinese
language proficiency test for non-native speakers. Level 1 is the easiest and
features the most common words; level 6 is the highest, most difficult words.
H. English meaning with usage notes
When multiple Chinese words are shown for a single Pinyin word or phrase, the
diamonds and HSK level information can direct the user to the more common, familiar
meanings. WDCD shows the same frequency information for all meanings of the same
Chinese words.

Using this Dictionary
The Websters Digital Chinese Dictionary is a fast, easy way to find the word you
want.
1. Open the Websters Digital Chinese Dictionary using Adobe Acrobat Reader
or compatible PDF viewer.
2. From the Edit menu, choose Find.

A. How can I copy the Chinese characters (or other entries) from the
dictionary into my email or other documents?
(1) In the PDF Reader, select the Chinese text and choose Edit > Copy.
(2) In your email or other application, choose Edit > Paste.
(3) Select the Chinese text and choose a Chinese font, like AR PL New Sung.
B. How do I search for words in Pinyin without tone marks or tone numbers?

In the Advanced Search dialog box, choose (1) Match Exact word or phrase
and (2) Stemming. In the example above, er di tie will be located in the
dictionary. Click the Results list to open the corresponding page.
