This series will include books on state-of-the-art developments in computational
and experimental methods in structures, and as such it will comprise several
volumes covering the latest developments. Each volume will consist of single-
authored work or several chapters written by the leading researchers in the
field. The aim will be to provide the fundamental concepts of experimental and
computational methods as well as their relevance to real world problems.
The scope of the series covers the entire spectrum of structures in engineering.
As such it will cover both classical topics in mechanics, as well as emerging
scientific and engineering disciplines, such as: smart structures, nanoscience
and nanotechnology; NEMS and MEMS; micro- and nano-device modelling;
functional and smart material systems.

Preface
Wear is one of the main reasons for inoperability in components having
mechanical joints, and produces enormous costs to our society. An ade-
quate understanding of the wear damage phenomenon allows engineers to
accurately predict the operational life, or maintenance period, of modern
mechanical elements, and thus reduce costs of inoperability or obtain an
optimum design (i.e. selecting proper contact pair materials, shapes, and
surfacefinishingaccordingtothemechanicalandenvironmentalconditions,
and desired durability). Therefore, the economic implication of a proper
wear prediction in mechanical components can be of enormous value to
the industry. This book presents a compilation of the main recent com-
putation techniques and practical studies in the field of wear which are
applied in advanced engineering applications and materials. Contributions
fromleading experts in these fields and youngerpromising researchersgive
a detailed overview of different modern techniques and materials that can
be considered by researchers and practicing engineers in order to reduce
surface damage and wear in mechanical components and materials. Also,
this book is veryuseful for PhD students in MechanicalEngineeringareas,
especially to those research topics that are clearly governed by some type
ofsurfacedamageduetothesurfaceinteractionsproducedbyamechanical
contact:wear,fretting wear,fretting,andfretting fatigue.Finally,it serves
also as a reference into the state of the art in the most recent numericalor
experimental studies related to wear in practicing engineering applications
and/or materials.

Luis Rodr´ıguez-Tembleque is an Associate Pro-
fessorinthe DepartmentContinuumMechanicsand
TheoryofStructuresattheEscuelaT´ecnicaSuperior
de Ingenier´ıa(ETSI), Universidad de Sevilla, Spain.
His researchinterests are focused on Computational
Mechanics (based on the Finite Element Method
and the Boundary Element Method), with empha-
sis on Computational Contact Mechanics (including
friction,rolling-contactandwearsimulation),Multi-
scale Material Modelling and Fracture and Damage
MechanicsproblemsinadvancedMultifieldMaterials(i.e.piezoelectricand
magnetoelectroelasticmaterials)orMultifield Nanocomposites(i.e. carbon
nanotube reinforced composites). He has co-edited several books on Wear
andContactMechanicsandhehaspublishednumerouschaptersandpapers
in scientific journals and conference proceedings.
Jesu´s V´azquez is an Associate Professor in the
Department of Mechanical Engineering and Manu-
facturing at the Escuela T´ecnica Superior de Inge-
nier´ıa(ETSI), Universidadde Sevilla, Spain. He has
workedmainlyinfrettingfatigue,fatigueinnotched
components and contact mechanics. In fatigue —
fretting fatigue and fatigue at notches — he has
worked mainly in the development of fatigue life
models in order to predict the crack initiation and

crack propagationphases. In fretting fatigue, he also has workedanalysing
the effect produced by shot and laser peening on the fretting fatigue
life, being focused in the induced residual stress, its cyclic relaxation,
and the surface roughness of these treatments. In contact mechanics, his
researchisfocusedonthedevelopmentofanalyticalsolutionsforthecontact
stress/strain fields produced in different fretting cases.
M. H. Ferri Aliabadi is a Professor of Aerospace
Structures andholds the ZaharoffChair in Aviation
at Imperial College London, UK. He was Head of
DepartmentofAeronautics,ImperialCollege(2009–
2017). Prior to joining Imperial College in 2005,
he was Professor of Computational Mechanics and
the Director of Aerospace Engineering at Queen
Mary,UniversityofLondon(1997–2004)andReader
and Head of Damage Tolerance Division at WIT,
Southampton(1987–1997).FerriM. H. Aliabadi has
workedfor25yearsinthefieldofComputationalStructuralMechanicsand
hasestablishedaninternationalreputationforhisachievementsindevelop-
ment of Computational Method related to Fracture & Damage Mechanics.
He has pioneered a new generation of boundary element methods and is
noted for his contributions to other fields including Acoustics, Nonlinear
Mechanics, Wear Mechanics, Optimisation and Reliability Analysis and
Multiscale Material Modelling.
