1.Introduction
Au printemps 2007, le comité de rédaction du magazine interne de Pharma A, une
grande entreprise multinationale suisse, se réunit pour sa réunion mensuelle. Une
modification profonde dans la conception du magazine, qui a eu lieu quelques
mois auparavant, suscite des réactions à propos de sa nouvelle forme. La plupart
des participants est de langue maternelle (suisse-)allemande, avec l’exception no-
table de PW, un expat– et c’est lui le chef.

CB: &funktionierts mit den farben hier schön als kontrast (.) aber (in, mit) dem braun das
wir auch in dieser palette haben die wir (.)nutzen sollten (.) die wir auch hinten (xxx)
nutzen müssen im (xxx) bereich (..) [(also jetzt sicher noch)(xxx)
SM: [also jetzt (.) die die modische farbkonstellation jetzt rein aus der graphischen
sprache her (ist) sicherlich irgendwie son klinisches blau so türkis grün blau so was ge-
wesen das wär chic gewesen mit dem braun jetzt rein (.) nur also auch von (.) von der
graphiksprache die (.) mir jetzt zumindest so bekannt ist dass man halt braun (.) dass
man das mit hellen tönen mischt +mit+((PW kommt zur Tür rein)) blau[tönen (.)

La séance avait commencé informellement en suisse allemand; les membres du
comité de rédaction – tous germanophones à l’exception d’une personne, qui
parle cependant bien l’allemand – étaient passés à l’allemand standard au début
de la séance proprement dite. Puis s’ouvre la porte, PW, qui ne parle pas l’alle-
mand, entre dans la salle. Après quelques brouhahas, CF reprend les propos de
CB, énoncés en allemand, mais cette fois en anglais («Christoph you said we have
to use white (..) who said we have to use white we?») et toute l’équipe switche à
l’anglais.
Les détails des choix de langue observés mériteraient que l’on s’y attarde. Nous
nous limiterons pourtant, ici, à trois remarques:
– Tout le monde est conscient que l’on switche à l’anglais à cause du chef (parti-
cipant related code-switching) parce que celui-ci ne parle pas l’allemand; ceci fait
d’ailleurs l’objet de blagues. Dès qu’il quitte la salle, la langue qu’il a imposée à
ses collaborateurs est de nouveau immédiatement abandonnée en faveur de l’al-
lemand.
– Selon la doxa, représentation partagée par pour ainsi dire tous les employés de
Pharma A que nous avons interrogés, mais nulle part consignée par écrit, l’an-
glais représente la corporate language. Il n’empêche que la langue préférentielle
de l’équipe de rédaction est l’allemand.
