Het vlaggeschip bevindt zich nu – na de sprong van vijfhonderd jaren, die het station van de MvdE op Pigell uitvoerde – in het jaar 49.488 voor de geboorte van Christus, dus in totaal 51.892 jaren verwijderd van de ‘reele tijd’.De ruimtelijke afstand tot Terra, de centrale wereld van het solaire imperium, is daarbij vergeleken gering: Pigell of Tanos VI, de standplaats van de Crest, is een planeet van de Wegazon, waar vandaan de aarde – naar interstellaire maatstaven gemeten – slechtrs ‘op een steenworp afstand’ ligt.Toser-Ban, een Meester van de Eilanden, krijgt dan ook de opdracht om de Crest op Terra in de val te lokken; De MvdE gebruiken Don Redhorse en zijn kameraden, die per materie-overbrenger vanaf Pigell op de aarde verzeild raakten, als lokaas.De Crest nadert om de groep van Don Redhorse af te halen, maar het geniepige spelletje van Toser-Ban wordt nog net op tijd doorzien. De MvdE sterft, en als de wapens van de maanvesting het vuur openen op de Crest, gebeurt dat een fraktie vna een sekonde te laat…
