The Indiana University School of Medicine Lecturers and Clinical Rank Faculty
Promotion Committee met on September 25, 2014 to review the dossier of Mary Regina
Ciccarelli, M.D. for consideration for promotion to Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and
Clinical Medicine.
Dr. Ciccarelli graduated from St. John's University in 1978 and received her Medical
Degree from Albany Medical College in 1982. She completed a combined Medicine/Pediatrics
residency Indiana University School of Medicine in 1986. After several years in private practice
in Maryland and Wisconsin, Dr. Ciccarelli returned to the Indiana University School of Medicine
in 1991 as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Pediatrics. Dr. Ciccarelli was
promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Medicine in 1996. She has held this
rank since 1996. Dr. Ciccarelli's declared area of excellence is service.
Service
Dr. Ciccarelli's service accomplishments and activities are numerous, notew011hy and
impactful. There are two specific areas that deserve specific acknowledgement in education
leadership/program development and clinical program development.
Indiana University School of Medicine has one of the largest and most renowned
combined Medicine/Pediatrics training programs in the country. This is in a large part due to Dr.
Ciccarelli's passion for education. Dr. Ciccarelli served as the Program Director for this
residency from 1993 until 2006 and then served in the role of Associate Residency Director from
2006 until 2013. The residency match selection for this training program is intense. The quality
of the residents, the superior cmTiculum, the outstanding clinical experiences and the feel of the
program are all direct results of her hard work, dedication and vision as to what a great training
program can truly become. With this expe11ise, she has been an active member of the

Medicine/Pediatrics Program Directors Association on a national level, serving on several key
committees including the executive committee.
Dr. Ciccarelli has been the Associate Chair of Education within the Department of
Pediatrics since 2006. She was the first faculty member to serve in this role. This position has a
broad array of responsibilities which include oversight of medical student clerkships and
electives, the pediatric residency, the combined training pediatric programs with Medicine and
Emergency Medicine and the pediatric fellowships. Other areas of responsibility include budget
development and oversight, faculty development programs, continuing medical education
programs and department-wide educational initiatives. During her tenure the number of pediatric
fellowships has increased from 9 to 14. The work and planning for the creation of an ACGME
accredited fellowship is no small undertaking. These additional pediatric fellowships in
Nephrology, Critical Care, Infectious Disease, Child Abuse, and Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine
will help to serve the patients of central Indiana, as well as the entire state.
Dr. Ciccarelli has been a regular invited speaker for both the Indiana University School
of Medicine Leadership in Academic Medicine Program and Faculty Enrichment Education
Program faculty development series.
The Graduate Medical Education has undergone tremendous changes in the last 10 years
including curricular reform, core competencies, duty hours and most recently the milestones. The
Departmental of Pediatrics has navigated these changes quite well because of Dr. Ciccarelli's
leadership and insight.
Dr. Ciccarelli is a primary care provider and continuity clinic preceptor at the North
Arlington Health Center within Eskenazi Health. She has worked here since 1991, which is a
true testament to her dedication to her patients.
Dr. Ciccarelli has developed a clinical program that has become a benchmark for other
similar programs across the country. While working at the North Arlington Health Center, she
identified a need to better facilitate the transition of youth with chronic health conditions or
disabilities from pediatric providers to adult providers which many time means different
resources and infrastructure. She sought funding to build such a program. Dr. Ciccarelli secured
a grant of $340,000 a year from the State Health Depmtment from 2006 through 2016. Thus, the
Center for Youth and Adult with Conditions of Childhood was developed. This Center now
serves over 1,000 individuals with chronic diseases and disabilities from the age of 11 to 27 from
over 75% of the Indiana counties. A 20 member advisory board with a significant number of
public members was created to oversee the program. The Center for Youth and Adult with
Conditions of Childhood has reached both regional and national acclaim, receiving the
Indianapolis Business Journal Health Care Hero Award in 2011 and the ARC oflndiana Health
Care Award in 2013. '

Dr. Ciccarelli has established a "Train the Trainer" program such that representatives
from other health systems across the country descend upon Indianapolis to learn the "nuts and
bolts" of how to develop and build such a program for their respective institutions.
Dissemination of this program's vision and concepts will ultimately help thousands of patients
across the country. To assist the individual primary care providers with this unique patient
population, Dr. Ciccarelli has developed a primary care "transition toolkit" to assist providers in
their care of these patients.
Knowing that outcomes research will be a necessary and needed component of the Center
for Youth and Adult with Conditions of Childhood, Dr. Ciccarelli now has an !RB-approved
patient database from which key clinical questions, and ultimately answers, can be derived.
Dr. Ciccarelli has lectured regionally and nationally about the Center for Youth and Adult
with Conditions of Childhood and how it can and does enhance patient care. She has served and
chaired numerous educational committees past and present for both her Department and the
Indiana University School of Medicine. In addition, she has served as an advisor to well over a
hundred students, residents and fellows.
Dr. Ciccarelli has served on a national level for a number of years. Organization
participation and leadership positions include the Child Neurology Foundation, the Healthcare
Transition Research Consortium, the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Disabilities,
the Association of Pediatric Program Directors and the Medicine/Pediatric Program Directors
Association. Her invited presentations related to service span the spectrum of local, regional and
national audiences. This again speaks to Dr. Ciccarelli's dedication and passion for sharing her
expertise with her colleagues.
Dr. Ciccarelli's scholarship includes seven peer-reviewed publications, two invited
publications, fifteen abstracts and one book chapter while in rank. I sense that the Center for
Youth and Adult with Conditions of Childhood patient database will provide a platform for
future scholarship.
Dr. Ciccarelli has published one peer reviewed service curriculum manuscript and eight
peer reviewed manuscripts related to her area of expe1tise. She is first author two of these and
she is senior author on one and sole author on one. Very importantly, the impact of her
scholarship is quite notable. Dr. Ciccarelli has served on and was one of the authors of a report
commissioned by the American Academy of Pediatrics to develop and publish a new clinical
report on health care transition. This repo1t was published in 2011 and has become the best
practice for all the fellows by the sponsoring organizations. The impact of this scholarship is
commented on some of her external reviewers.

Dr. Ciccarelli's accomplishment here at the Indiana University School of Medicine have
been outstanding. Dr. David Crabb's Chair letter from the Department of Medicine states "It
would be hard to imagine anyone in Indiana, or the rest of the country, who comes close to Dr.
Ciccarelli in terms of impact on and visibility in Medicine and Pediatrics education and the
development of programs to facilitate the transitions of care from pediatricians to internists and
other adult care providers, and thus she is an outstanding candidate for promotion. Dr.
Ciccarelli's cumulative efforts clearly reach the level of sustained national recognition."
Teaching
Dr. Ciccarelli lectures for ICM-1, ICM-2, Pediatric Therapeutics, Medical Ethics and the
Pediatric Ambulatory clerkship. For postgraduate resident education she participates in the
Med/Peds Noon Conference series, The Pediatric Noon Conference series and the Pediatric
Community Pediatrics series. In addition she serves as a faculty preceptor at the No11h Arlington
Health Center, the Center for Youth and Adult with Conditions of Childhood Transition Clinic
and the Wishard Newborn Service. Evaluations by students and residents point to her openness
and enthusiasm for teaching. Her departmental eRVUs are at or above the departmental average.
Her invited teaching presentations again encompass local, regional and national audiences.
Dr. Ciccarelli received the Department Medicine Distinguished Teacher Award in 2004,
The Indiana University Teaching Excellence recognition Award in 2003 and 2004. She was a
Finalist, ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Reach Award 2003 and she received the
Outstanding Teacher Award, Gen Medicine/Geriatrics in 2004.
There are seven external letters and all come from leaders in the field of pediatrics at their
respective universities. The letter writers attest to Dr.Ciccarelli's national presence and support
her promotion.

Ciccarelli's work with children with special health care needs and continuing that care as those
children mature and require transitioning into the adult service provider system has incorporated
the needs of patients in her community and evolved this into a significant national area for
improved care with Dr. Ciccarelli as one of the most recognized leaders in the area."

Cicarelli has demonstrated excellence in service to the Indiana University School of Medicine
for over 20 years. These are detailed in her cun-iculurn vitae under Appointments and under
Service. The most outstanding of these are her services in the roles of administering the
educational activities as the Medicine Pediatrics Residency Director and Associate Residency
Director from 1993 until 2013. Her notable achievements include supervision of the Directors of
the Medical Student Clerkship and Electives, Pediatric Residencies and categorical and
combined programs as well as Pediatric Fellowship programs."
W. Carl Cooley, M.D., Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics, Geisel School of Medicine at
Dartmouth, Center for Medical Horne Improvement, Medical Director states "I know Dr.
Ciccarelli as a person with exceptional integrity, vision, and passion for the best possible
outcomes for youth and young adults with complex conditions of childhood onset through the
development and implementation of improved models of care. She has been one of an initially
small group of pediatric and medicine-pediatrics physicians concerned about the transition of this
population from pediatric care to adult care and in the cultivation of skills that would allow for
the highest level of independence in health care self-management. The writing group convened
by the American Academy of Pediatrics was created to develop and publish a new clinical report
on healthcare transition. The writing group included representation from national professional
leaders in pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, and medicine. Dr. Ciccarelli was
chosen as the representative of the latter group. Based on her already considerable experience
with the issue and with the development of programs to support young adults during transitions
of care, she made impo1iant contributions to the writing, editing, and finalization of this
document, which was published in Pediatrics in June 2011. Since then, the clinical report has
become regarded as best practice for all of their fellows by the sponsoring organizations such as
the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Physicians and American Academy
of Family Physicians."

medicine-pediatrics-trained academician can make a unique and scholarly contribution to how
medicine addresses the life-long care of patients with clu·onic disease. She has made important
contributions on the national scene and is one of two or three people who are most recognized in
the field. The statewide transition suppo1t program for youth with special health care needs is a
model program that is much admired. Dr, Ciccarelli excels in the role of creative mastermind.
She makes her mark nationally within the medicine-pediatrics educational world. She is an
instigator, organizer and facilitator. Her teaching at the national level is exceptional and I can see
from her curriculum vitae that she is heavily involved in developing educational programs at the
institutional level. Importantly, these programs seem to be extremely relevant to medical
education and well balanced."

Children's Hospital, Akron Children's Hospital states "Dr. Ciccarelli assumed leadership roles
within the relatively new Med/Peds Program Directors' organization as I assumed leadership

meets in alternate years in conjunction with the APPD. Dr. Ciccarelli was a very valued and
constructive planning participant. She is highly respected among the members of both
organizations.
