hazardousmaterials.Inordertopreventinjurytopatientsand/oroperatorsanddamagetotheanesthesia
system,pleasereviewSection2–Safetybeforeperforminganyoftheprocedurescontainedinthis

General Description
TheLandmark™VeterinaryAnesthesiaSystemisadevicethatallowsfortheadministration of
anestheticandnon-anestheticgasestopatients.Ifequippedwithavaporizer,themachineisalsocapable
ofdeliveringananestheticagentintheformofavaporinconjunctionwiththegasorgasmixture.The
vaporizerconvertsaliquidanestheticintoameasuredamountofvapor,whichisthencarriedtothe
patientbytheoxygenorgasmixture.Figure1-1showsadiagramofhowthesystemoperates.
Beforeanesthesiacanbeadministered,anoxygen(and/orothermedicalgas)supplyisconnectedtothe
anesthesiamachine,thevaporizerisfilledwithanestheticagent,andabsorbercanisterisfilledwithCO
2
absorbent.Thebreathingbag,patientbreathingcircuit,andallaccessorytubingandbagsarethen
connected.
Theoperatorincreasestheoxygenflowratebyturningtheflowmetercontrolvalvecounterclockwise
untilthedesiredrateisindicatedonthemeter.Thebreathingbaggraduallyinflates.
Next,theoperatorsetstheanestheticagent(e.g.,Sevofluraneand/orIsoflurane)concentration(%)by
turningtheknobonthevaporizer(s)tothedesiredsetting(s).
Thewyeconnectorofthepatientbreathingcircuitisattachedtothemaskor15mmendotrachealtube
connector.Thegasmixtureflowsthroughtheinspirationvalveintothepatient’slungs.Thepatient
exhalesthroughtheexpirationvalveintothebreathingbagwheretheexhaledgasmixeswiththe
constantlyflowingfreshgas.

Inarebreathingtypecircuit,thefreshandexhaledgasmixtureisforcedthroughtheCO absorberwhere

theexhaledcarbondioxideisremovedandtheventilationcycleisrepeated.Inanon-rebreathingcircuit,
theexhaledgasesareventedintoawastegasscavengersystem.
Theoperatordeterminestheinspiratorypressureforventilatingthepatientbyadjustingthepop-offvalve
whileobservingthesystem’spressuregauge.Themorethepop-offvalveisclosed,thehigherthe
pressure.
