English and “Associated writings and ” are encountered throughout the ages across cultures. On the one hand, the term can mean the juxtaposition of written material on a single artifact. For example, various texts left by people on walls in a variety of different languages and handwritings, either alongside or on top of each other, over shorter or longer periods of time within the context of pilgrimages. On the other hand, it can mean a whole ensemble of archaeological artefacts within a common archaeological context. For example, labeled goods on a Roman merchant ship or the decommissioned documents from the archives of an Egyptian country estate used as packaging for a mummy. This volume contains 12 contributions from a workshop organized in March 2017 within the framework of Heidelberg’s Collaborative Research Center 933 and “Materiale Textkulturen and “, in which case studies of and “associated texts and ” from the Ancient Near East, Classical China, the Greco-Roman Epoch, the European Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period are presented and systematically discussed for the first time. German Uber Zeiten und Kulturen hinweg trifft man auf, Vergesellschaftete Schriften’. Zum einen kann es sich hierbei um ein Nebeneinander von Geschriebenem auf ein und demselben Artefakt zum Beispiel verschiedene Texte, die von Personen in diversen Sprachen und Handschriften uber mehr oder minder lange Zeitraume neben- oder ubereinander auf Mauern in Wallfahrtskontexten hinterlassen wurden. Zum anderen kann es sich um ein ganzes Ensemble schrifttragender Artefakte in einem gemeinsamen archaologischen Kontext zum Beispiel beschriftete Waren in einem romischen Handelsschiff oder die gemeinsam als Mumienkartonage verwendeten, ausgemusterten Dokumente aus dem Archiv eines agyptischen Landgutes. Der Band enthalt 12 Beitrage eines im Marz 2017 im Rahmen des Heidelberger Sonderforschungsbereichs 933 and “Materiale Textkulturen and ” veranstalteten Workshops, in dem Fallbeispiele, Vergesellschafteter Schriften’ vom Alten Orient, dem Klassischen China, der Griechisch-Romischen Epoche, dem Europaischen Mittelalter und der Fruhen Neuzeit vorgestellt und erstmals systematisch diskutiert wurden. Eroffnet wird damit einerseits die Perspektive auf die Bandbreite des Phanomens. Andererseits sind die vorgelegten Beitrage Ausgangspunkt, auf allgemeinerer, soziologischer Ebene, der der Begriff der Vergesellschaftung entlehnt ist, die Frage nach Zufalligkeiten und Kausalitaten von Schriftvergesellschaftung zu erortern, nach Konzeptionen, moglichen Bedingungen ihrer Genese und nach ihren Intentionen.
