Fossil tree trunks and leaves from 15,000 years ago are found up to 15 meters above the present valley floor of the Lluta Valley in northern Chile, indicating higher water levels and more vegetation in the past. Radiocarbon dating of 17 samples from the stratified slope deposits containing the fossil plants yields ages from 38,000 to 15,000 years ago. The youngest dates are interpreted as the beginning of river incision and lowering of the valley floor, preventing further tree growth at higher elevations. This was likely due to increased runoff in the river from the Andes during the last wet phase in the region.
