1 Introduction
Thisbookcontainschaptersthatinvestigatechildren’sacquisitionofdifferent
typesofvariationintheprimarylinguisticdata(PLD)thattheyareexposedto.
Natural languages often display word order variation that may at first sight
seem like instances ofoptionality. Anexample ofthis isthe word orderalter-
nation in particle verb constructions in Norwegian, where the particle may
precedeorfollowthedirectobjectDP,illustratedin(1a,b):
(1) a. Hankastetut hunden.
he threw out dog-the
‘Hethrew outthedog.’
b. Hankastethundenut.
he threw dog-theout
‘Hethrewthedogout.’
Language-internaloptionalityhasrepresentedandcontinuestorepresenta
challengeforanylinguistictheorythatisbasedoneconomyprinciples,since
generally one of the options should be more economical than the other and
thusconstitutetheonlygrammaticalone.Whatdoesitmeanforoneandthe
samespeakertofindbothwordordersin(1)grammatical?Onepossibilityis
that the speaker is entertaining two different grammars (or parameter set-
tings)simultaneously.Thishypothesisissupportedbythefactthatonly(1a)is
possible in Swedish, while Danish only uses (1b). So does a speaker of
Norwegian who alternates between (1a) and (1b) access two parallel gram-
marswithrespecttoparticleshift,onecorrespondingtotheSwedishpattern
