EPIDEMIOLOGICAL, DIAGNOSTIC
AND PUBLIC HEALTH ASPECTS
The research presented in this thesis was conducted at the Maastricht University, VU University
Medical Center Amsterdam, Amsterdam Public Health Service (GGD), the North-Western State
Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov (St. Petersburg), the Karolinska University Hospital
in Huddinge (Sweden), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon
(France). Furthermore, the research presented in this thesis was supported in part by the
European Commission within the Sixth Framework Programme through the EpiGenChlamydia
project (contract no. LSHG-CT-2007-037637, see www.EpiGenChlamydia.eu for more details), a
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-American Society for
Microbiology International Travel Award (to V. Smelov, 2006), the European Urological
Scholarship Programme (Clinical Fellowship 2007 to V. Smelov) and the Swedish Cancer Society
(Scholarship 2011 to V. Smelov). The work was in part undertaken during the tenure of a
postdoctoral fellowship from the IARC, partially supported by the European Commission FP7
