Introduction

aturbandictionary.com, definitions aren’t written by professional lexicographers.
They’re written by everyday English speakers—the real authority on how
language is used. For the last twelve years, their definitions have made
urbandictionary.com the place to go to define any word, from abc sex to zomg. It’s
more than just slang—even words that appear in a regular dictionary are defined in
Urban Dictionary.
I started Urban Dictionary in 1999 as a parody of the traditional dictionary, but
it’s grown to be more than a parody. It has developed a rebellious, opinionated,
honest, anti-authoritarian personality, and the site grows with one new definition
every 30 seconds.
Since 1999 authors have sent in over six million definitions. This book is the best
of the best—definitions written by authors, approved by editors, enjoyed by readers,
and now in print.

a crapella
Singing out loud while listening to music with your headphones on. Whereas the
singer gets the benefit of the music, those unfortunate to be standing nearby are
subjected to an unaccompanied (and invariably crappy) rendition of the song.
I wish that guy would turn his iPod off—his a crapella version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” is killing
me.
aarping
When an elderly person, such as your grandfather, complains incessantly about
nothing.
Grandpa ruined another family dinner by aarping the whole time about his bunions.
abacadaba
To hurry up and get a multiple-choice test over with because it is so hard that it is
pointless to try to take it, or because you don’t care about the grade. From the
format of a multiple-choice test, where students fill in the lettered bubble of the
correct answer.
Suze: How did you do on the test?
Regan: I just abacadabaed it.
abc gum
Stands for “already been chewed” gum. Typically found under desks in school.
I don’t want your abc gum!
abc sex
Sex only on anniversaries, birthdays, and Christmas.
They’ve been married so long they only have abc sex.
academic bulimia
The process of learning or memorizing by rote, subsequently followed by the
regurgitation of that knowledge onto an exam answer sheet. Just as with the serious
eating disorder, this form of bulimia results in no real retention of substance. This
term is frequently applied to describe a common practice of young medical students.
I can’t remember anything that I learned last night. It’s like I grabbed the answer sheet, puked out
all the answers, and forgot everything immediately. I’d say that’s academic bulimia.
acoustic shave
Shaving with a razor, not an electric shaver.
Andy: Hey man, do you use Norelco?
Jordan: No way. I shave acoustic!
act a fool
To act like a total idiot.
It is not a good idea to act a fool around your boss.
ADHD
Stands for attention deficit somethingk. Hey! I spelled “something” wrong. Ha-ha.
Hey, look, a squirrel. Wait, what am I doing here again? Omigawd my elbow itches.
Wonder what’s on TV? I like Jennifer Lopez. I hate kumquats. I really love
urbandictionar . . . where was I again?
Hey! I don’t have ADH . . . (Loses interest, chases after a bird)
adverblasting
When a commercial is much louder than the program you were watching.
Man, I was watching NCIS, but I had to turn down my TV when the commercials came on
because of damn adverblasting.
afterclap
That last person who keeps clapping after everyone else has stopped. Normally
parents.
(Large chorus of clapping)
Mom: Did you hear little Billy’s singing?
Aunt: Yes, his voice really stood out!
(Mom and Aunt are the last two clapping.)
aggro
Short for “aggravated.” Crazy, wild.
The line was so long, and it was so hot, I started getting totally aggro.
aibohphobia
The irrational fear of palindromes (words that read the same forward and
backward).
Dude 1: Hey, what’s your name?
Dude 2: Bob.
Dude 1: AAAAAAAAAAH! (Runs and hides behind sofa)
Bob: Wow.
Dude 1: AAAAAAAAAAH! (Runs away and falls down stairs)
air jerk
Making a jerking-off motion with one’s hand to express disgust, disinterest, or
disbelief, while simultaneously rolling one’s eyes.
I think she’s pissed. She just gave me an air jerk and walked away.
air quotes
In conversation, the dual flexing of the index and middle finger of both hands to
signify the presence of scare quotes. Used ad nauseam by “pretentious” and
ostensibly “intelligent” university students to advertise their “superior morals” and
“erudition.”
Using air quotes in this example is, like, so “postmodern.”
airplane mode
When someone cuts themselves off from the world by not logging on to Facebook
or checking their cell phones. Usually occurs after a breakup or a rough workweek.
Derived from the cell phone setting of the same name in which incoming messages
or phone calls cannot be received.
Sarah went into airplane mode for three days after Charlie dumped her.
airport vultures
Passengers waiting to board a plane who stand around the boarding gate before a
flight, regardless of where their seats are or when boarding actually is.
The flight attendant became so irritated with the airport vultures that the flight was abruptly
canceled.
aisle salmon
Moving in the opposite direction of everyone else using the aisle. While they can be
spotted in any type of aisle, they are frequently seen on airlines during loading and
deplaning.
Did you see the aisle salmon trying to work his way back five rows to get a roller bag out of the
overhead while everyone was trying to get off the plane?
alarm shock
The shock of having to wake up a lot earlier than you normally would due to school
after summer vacation.
Alarm shock is such a drag! (Falls back asleep and misses bus)
alcohol
A substance found in beer (except American beer) and many other fine beverages
that makes people excessively happy, sad, belligerent, or horny. It allows white men
to dance and ugly men to get laid (when given to their victims).
You wanna get with that hottie? You’re gonna need to buy lots of alcohol!
alltheist
A person who tries to claim every religion out of fear of picking the wrong one. A
typical alltheist believes in Jesus, Hindu gods, and even the Flying Spaghetti
Monster.
Guy: I don’t want to go to hell, so I’ll just become an alltheist.
Girlfriend: Why am I even going out with you?
