RESUMO

A perda de um membro é uma situação que se apresenta com grande impacto na vida
das pessoas provocando grande sofrimento e tensão emocional, originando uma série
de respostas psicológicas complexas.
A pessoa amputada passa por diversas fases e sentimentos, desde a negação à
depressão. Ela confronta-se com uma perda de autonomia que limitará o desempenho
das suas obrigações profissionais, familiares e sociais que até então eram bem
sucedidas (Augusto, Rodrigues, Simões Amaro & Almeida, 2004; Chini & Boemer,
2002).
Após uma amputação surgem alterações bio-psico-sócio-espirituais que vão interferir
na vida das pessoas que se sentem isoladas e diferentes, com alterações a nível da
auto-imagem e do auto-conceito. A mulher que é sujeita a amputação vivencia essa
experiência não apenas com o sentimento da perda física, mas também como a perda
do seu “Eu”.
A alteração da auto-imagem corporal leva a pessoa a sentimentos de inferioridade e
ansiedade que devem ser minimizadas pelos profissionais de saúde, nomeadamente
pelos enfermeiros, com a estimulação para o auto-cuidado.
A realização de estudos centrados na experiência vivida em situações de amputação é
escassa, especialmente os de âmbito qualitativo com uma abordagem fenomenológica.
Neste contexto, este estudo apresenta como objectivos: i) conhecer as vivências das
mulheres em idade adulta submetidas a amputação do membro inferior; ii) analisar o
significado pessoal desse tipo de perda corporal; iii) identificar qual a actuação dos
enfermeiros perante a mulher que vivencia a amputação.
Para o efeito, desenvolvemos um estudo qualitativo com características
fenomenológicas. As participantes deste estudo são sete mulheres em idade adulta
submetidas a amputação do membro inferior. Elegemos como instrumento de colheita
de dados a entrevista semi-estruturada e os procedimentos propostos por Cohen, Kahn
e Steeves (2000) como suporte ao tratamento e análise da informação recolhida.
Neste estudo emergiram cinco temas centrais que permitem compreender de forma
mais abrangente a experiência das mulheres amputadas: “vivenciando a notícia da
amputação”, “confrontando a realidade da perda”, “adaptando a vida à nova condição”,
“relacionando com os outros (e o OUTRO)” e “retratando a imagem e o corpo”.
A experiência da amputação vivida pelas mulheres é um período de grande sofrimento
manifestando-se a raiva e a revolta após o choque inicial da notícia da necessidade de

amputação. Sentimentos de perda, dependência, inferioridade, invalidez, assim como,
reacções depressivas revelaram-se comuns após o confronto com a realidade da perda
do membro. Esta complexidade de reacções e sentimentos não é pontual, prolongando-
se, muitas vezes, para lá do período de reabilitação.
A compreensão, pelos enfermeiros, da experiência vivenciada pelas mulheres
amputadas é essencial no cuidar. Assim, o apoio por parte dos profissionais de saúde
mostrou ser importante, quer na aceitação do acto de amputar, quer no alívio do próprio
sofrimento, através do estabelecimento de uma relação empática manifestada pela
presença incondicional, pela escuta activa e pelo toque terapêutico.

ABSTRACT

The loss of a limb is a situation that has a large impact in people’s lives, causing great
suffering and emotional stress and giving place to a number of complex psychological
reactions.
The amputated person goes through several phases and feelings, varying from denial
to depression. That person is confronted with a loss of autonomy that will limit the
development of his/her professional obligations and family or social tasks hitherto well
succeeded (Chini and Boemer, 2002; Augusto, 2004; Oliveira, 2004).
After an amputation, biological, psychological, social and spiritual changes occur,
which will interfere with people’s lives, making them feel isolated, different, with
changes in terms of self-image and self-concept. The women that are submitted to an
amputation live that experience not only in terms of physical loss but also as the loss of
their “Self”.
The change in body self-image leads people to feelings of inferiority and anxiety,
feelings that should be softened by health professionals, namely, by nurses, through
incentive of self-care.
The development of studies centred in the experience lived under situations of
amputation is scarce, especially those of qualitative nature following a
phenomenological approach.
Thus, this study aims: i) to know the experiences of adult women who were submitted
to the amputation of a lower limb; ii) to analyse the personal meaning of that type of
body loss; iii) to identify nurses’ actions when dealing with women who suffer an
amputation.
In order to achieve those objectives, we have developed a qualitative research study
with phenomenological characteristics. The participants are seven adult women who
have been submitted to the amputation of a lower limb. We have chosen to develop
semi-structured interviews and have followed the proceedings suggested by Cohen,
Kahn and Steeves (2000) as a basis for the treatment and analysis of the data
collected.
In this study, five central themes have emerged, allowing us to have a wider view of the
experience of amputated women, such as: “experiencing the news of the amputation”,
“confronting the reality of loss”, “ adapting herself to her new condition”, “relating to
others (and the OTHER)” and “expressing image and body”.
The experience of going through an amputation is a period of great suffering for women,
expressed by rage and anger after the initial shock brought by the news of the need to

get an amputation. Some of the most common feelings after realising one has lost a
limb are feelings of loss, of being dependent on other people, of inferiority, of being
handicapped, as well as depressive reactions. This complexity of reactions and feelings
is not occasional. In fact, it often goes beyond the rehabilitation period.
Truly, it is essential for nurses to understand the experience lived by amputated women
in order to give proper care. Thus, the support given by health professionals has proved
to be important both in the acceptance of the amputation act and in the relief of suffering
itself, through the establishment of an empathic relationship characterised by
unconditional presence, by active listening and by the therapeutic touch.
