Im Frühjahr 1944 begann die SS zusammen mit ungarischen Stellen über 430000 Personen jüdischer Herkunft aus dem ungarischen Kernland und den ungarisch besetzten Gebieten zu deportieren. Die Mehrheit der Verschleppten erreichte nach wenigen Tagen Auschwitz-Birkenau, wo drei Viertel von ihnen sofort nach Ankunft ermordet wurden. Nach der vorläufigen Einstellung der Transporte im Sommer 1944 wurden diese im November 1944 erneut aufgenommen. Diesmal führten sie in Zwangsarbeits- und Konzentrationslager im deutschen Reichsgebiet. In 315 Schriftzeugnissen dokumentiert der Band nicht nur das Schicksal der Juden nach der deutschen Besetzung im März 1944, sondern zeichnet auch ihren schrittweisen Ausschluss aus dem gesellschaftlichen Leben Ungarns seit 1938 nach sowie die physische Gewalt gegen einzelne Gruppen vor 1944. Der geographische Fokus der Publikation liegt auf dem Gebiet Ungarns, dessen Grenzverläufe im Friedensvertrag von Trianon 1920 festgelegt wurden, und auf den seit 1938 von Ungarn besetzen Regionen.
