Preface
One of the objectives of the IGU-LUCC Commission for the period 2000-
2004 is to promote the study of Land-use/Land-Cover Change throughout
the world as a geographical research focus. IGU-LUCC has been particularly
interested in continuing regional studies on land-use/cover changes that
enable integration of regional information and knowledge into a larger
regional framework, which may ultimately lead to a global framework.
The study of land-use/ cover change should neither stop at a regional and
local level, nor be trapped within the abstract "global argument". This
book is a result of such activities of the IGU-LUCC Commission as 1) the
IGU-LUCC Workshop in Moscow on "Global and Regional Land-Use /
Cover Change," 2) session "Land-use dynamics and sustainable
development" included in the International Conference "Society and
Environment Interaction under Global and Regional Changes" held in
Russia (Moscow—Barnaul), both in July 2003. These events focused on
Land-Use/Cover Change in Global and Regional Settings. The IGU-
LUCC Workshop and Session within the aforesaid International Conference
consisted of paper and poster sessions, as well as site visits in the vicinity
of Moscow and on Altai to acquaint delegates with regional LUCC studies.
Papers ranged from global trends of LUCC/Interaction of global
environmental changes and LUCC/Integration of environmental,
socioeconomic, and historical knowledge of LUCC following the concept
DPSIR/Documenting, classification and mapping LUCC issues/Regional
diversity of land use/cover changes/ Regional and local trends of LUCC
under various human impacts compared with general different-scale
trends/Land- use management and policy in different regions. The papers
presented in this book offer important points of view, insights, and examples
that contribute to understanding and development of global and regional
approaches to LUCC studies. The main idea was not the static description
of land-use/cover changes at different levels, but an explanation of the
causes and impact of changes, including the biophysical socioeconomic
dimensions. It is hoped that the book will prove useful to communities
involved in LUCC studies as well as general environmental research into
global and regional perspectives.

Most of the papers here were presented in the "IGU-LUCC 2003 Moscow
Workshop on Global and Regional Land Use/Cover Changes" and the
International Conference "Society and Environment Interaction Under
Global and Regional Changes" held in Barnaul (Altai), Russia in summer
2003. We thank Professor N.S. Kasimov of Moscow State University and
Professor V.M. Kotlyakov of the Russian Academy of Sciences for hosting
the Workshop/International Conference and those who presented papers
and participated in discussions. Our thanks also to the IGU-LUCC members
who contribute so much to this book.
