That phrase captures one way in which an educated
person approaches the world and its challenges.
Students who graduate from the University of Maryland
have been exposed to the tools that allow them to put
that perspective to work. Imparting such a perspective
may be an ambitious project for undergraduate educa
tion, but to aim for anything less would be unworthy of
a great university's goals for its students. Ten years ago,
Promises to Keep, a plan for undergraduate education
at Maryland, articulated those goals so eloquently we
repeat them here.
Undergraduate education at Maryland "aims to provide
students with a sense of identity and purpose, a concern
for others, a sense of responsibility for the quality of life
around them, a continuing eagerness for knowledge and
understanding, and a foundation for a lifetime of per
sonal enrichment."
As we learn with and from one another, we try to
"develop humane values," ''·celebrate tolerance and
fairness," "contribute to the social conscience," "moni
tor and assess private and collective assumptions," and
"recognize the glory, tragedy, and humor of the human
condition." Your years at the University of Maryland
can provide you with all the tools you need to accom
plish these goals. Students here are "educated to be
able to read with perception and pleasure, write and
speak with clarity and verve, handle numbers and com
putation proficiently, reason mathematically, generate
clear questions and find probable ru·guments, reach
substantiated conclusions, and accept ambiguity."

that would serve the emerging needs of industry, gov
ernment and society for highly educated citizens.
However, like the state of which it was a part, the
University of Maryland was segregated by race, and
barred African-Americans from attending. Beginning in
the post-war period, Maryland's black citizens asserted
tl1eir right to attend the state's premier public university
with ever greater force and power.

AT MARYLAND
In 1988, the University of Maryland, College Park,
was designated as the flagship institution for the
University System of Maryland. As well as pursuing a
serious research mission and continuing its high level of
service to the state, the university rededicated itself to
providing the highest quality graduate and undergradu
ate education. Increased undergraduate opportunities
for research and individual study; the development of
the College Park Scholars Program and the expansion
of the University Honors Program; the genesis of
Honors Humanities and Gemstone; the creation of
CORE, the general education program; and the estab
lishment of the Center for Teaching Excellence all
affirmed the legislature's designation of flagship.
After almost a century and a half, the University of
Maryland, College Park, seems to bear little resem
blance to the Maryland Agricultural College. Yet, at
heart, it remains the same: an engine of economic
growth, to be sure; a great research university, yes; a
source of enlightenment for the citizens of the state and
the world, of course. But, above all, this is a place
where nothing is more valued than the open and vigor
ous exploration and dissemination of ideas.

Assistant Program. As research assistants, students
develop close intellectual relationships with faculty
mentors and collaborate on faculty research projects.

research. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with
library staff in using the Reading Room to explore these
resources with their students.
Throughout the academic year, library staff schedule
orientations for those new to the libraries and those
wishing to improve their research skills. VICTOR, the
libraries' online catalog, provides access to bibliograph
ic records of most materials in the collections of all 13
University System of Maryland institution libraries, as
well as other libraries around the country. The libraries'
subscribe to an ever-growing number of electronic
resources, and VICTOR also provides information about
articles in thousands of journals.
