La famiglia lo trova riverso sul selciato. Suo figlio, Héctor Abad Faciolince, assalito da una tristezza che gli impedisce «di sentire la rabbia per intero», gli fruga nelle tasche e trova un foglietto, sul quale il padre ha scritto a mano una poesia sulla morte e sull’oblio, misteriosa e struggente, firmata da tre iniziali: J. L. B. Il pensiero va immediatamente a Jorge Luis Borges, al cui stile il sonetto sembra effettivamente rimandare; eppure, in nessuna edizione dell’opera omnia del grande scrittore argentino compaiono quei versi. La curiosità di risalire al nome del poeta si trasforma presto in un’ossessione, inscindibilmente legata all’urgenza di far luce sulla morte del padre. L’autore intraprende così una ricerca al contempo intima e letteraria, cercando di ricomporre i tasselli di un’opera che sono, in realtà, i tasselli dell’anima.
