Acknowledgements
This book has been a long time in the making and there are several individuals
without whom it would not have been possible.
Firstly to Feargal, without whose encouragement this project would never have
been completed. Next, to all of the individuals who took time out of their busy
lives to talk to me about my project, especially my interviewees – all of their input
was invaluable and in many ways they helped me to assert myself and my ideas
much more clearly.
My thanks extend also to the wider Department of Politics and in particular
the Richardson Institute at Lancaster University. On many occasions both the
department and the institute have provided me with opportunities to prove myself
and my research, and have raised interesting questions and ideas which have made
me think more deeply about the subjects involved in this book. I would also like
