Two dangers associated with unsecure
ammunition stockpiles
• Diversion

Unsecured or poorly-monitored national ammunition
stockpiles also lead to massive diversion into illicit
markets. Diverted conventional ammunition is
increasingly used to assemble improvised explosive

devices (IEDs).
• Explosions
In over 60 countries during the last decade, poorly-
stored ammunition stockpiles have inadvertently
exploded. Thousands of people have died, and the
livelihoods of entire communities were disrupted.

• Development of the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines
(IATG) was mandated 2009 by the UN General Assembly (A/63/182,
op. 72)
• Aims to assist interested States which wish to use the Guidelines to
improving ammunition stockpile safety and security.
• Based on the most comprehensive and highest existing standards.
• Developed using a three-tiered approach - basic, intermediate,
advanced (1/2/3) to allow States to attain the highest standards by
stages.
• Approved by a Panel of technical experts from around the world.
• Completion of the IATG was welcomed by the General Assembly in
2012.
• Available in 2 languages: Arabic and English
