Cholmondeley contrapone dos estereotipos femeninos: el de Lady Mary Carden, rubia, elegante, delicada, correcta, cariñosa, dulce, intachable, religiosa, trcintañera, y el de Elsa Grey, muy joven, morena, esbelta, hosca, impenetrable, proveniente de una familia problemática, turbia y seductora, con un punto salvaje. Mary y Elsa se ven complicadas en una trama sentimental, cuyos hilos forman triangulaciones posibles. En apenas cinco o seis momentos impecables por su economía, por su medida de las palabras y por su intensidad sensorial, por su oscilación entre el dentro y el fuera, la mirada autocrítica de la autora, su bisturí, saca a la luz sin sangre, entre los corsés y faldones, las escondidas entrañas “dignas de piedad pero también de recriminación- de mujeres diferentes. Incluso en la constatación de esa diferencia la modernidad de la autora es apabullante. Cholmondeley no aborda una feminidad única. Su mirada no simplifica. Sin embargo, la violencia que se ejerce sobre esas mujeres distintas es homogénea, apisonadora. El repertorio de reacciones no es muy extenso, y el lector contemporáneo deberá decidir quién es la víctima y quién el verdugo.
