Como casi cualquier opera prima, Un hombre tiene bastante de autobiografia. Gironella paso tambien por el seminario y desempeno diversos oficios antes de poder dedicarse a la escritura. Fue ademas un viajero impenitente, y era, por supuesto ampurdanes A Un hombre se le ha achacado una cierta tosquedad en el lenguaje y una influencia, quiza algo excesiva de Baroja. Sin embargo, la fluidez del discurso narrativo y la fuerza del personaje protagonista nos permiten adivinar, ya en esta primera novela, la mano del maestro. Un hombre obtuvo el Premio Nadal en 1946.
