STUDIES OF STYLISTIC FEATURES
COMMON TO THE PHOENICIAN INSCRIPTIONS AND THE BIBLE!

The first part of this study treated the word pairs and expression pairs common to the Bible and the
inscriptionary remnants of Phoenician literature. There we discussed 42 such word pairs and 2 expression pairs.
In the present article we shall expand this list of word pairs and shall study literary phrases, similes, expression
idioms and terms common to Phoenician-Punic epigraphy and the Bible.
A. Additional Word Pairs Common to the Phoenician Inscriptions and the Bible.
1: bhym / tht Ymÿ
Phoenician
The pair appears twice in asyndetic parataxis of a noun and its appositive. One example is the In-
scription of Tbnt, King of Sidon:
1 y<k>n I<k> zr‘ bhym tht $m$ (KAI 13: 7-8)?
may (you) not have any seed among the living under the sun
An additional appearance of the expression is in an inscription of Tbnt's son Eshmanezer. The phrases are si-
-milar:
1 ykn Im $r$ Imt wpr Im°l wt'r bhym tht ¿m3 (KAI 14:11-12).
May they have no root down below and no fruit upon top and may they not have any stately
appearance among the living under the sun.
Hebrew:
The pair appears twice in parallelism. In one instance there is strict parallelism:

and in your toil at which you toil under the sun
The other time, the components of the pair are somewhat distant, but the parallelism is nevertheless
clear:
The first and last parts of the verse are in full parallelism and this is proven by the components of
the pair being embedded in similar phraseology.’ It should also be pointed out that the prepositions b / tht
(in / under) which are part of the pair under discussion exist separately as a pair in its own right both in the
Bible and in Ugaritic.*

Phoenician: In the Eshmanezer Inscription the pair occurs two consecutive times in parallelism (even
though the literary composition is not strictly poetic).

(we are) the ones who built the houses of the gods, the house of Astarte in Sidon by the sea,
and we (also) caused Astarte to dwell in Shamem-A ddirim. We are the ones who built a house
for Eshmun, the holy prince (in) ‘nydll, and we caused him to dwell in Shamem-Addirim.
Hebrew: The pair appears in verb-noun parallelism:
banöh_baniti bet zbul lak / mäkön lXibteka ‘ölamim (I Ki. 8: 13).
I have built thee an exalted house
a place for thee to dwell in forever.
2 The, expression tht $m$ which is found in the Phoenician inscriptions and the identical Hebrew expression
in Ecclesiastes, has been a subject of controversy. It has been debated whether it was Phoenician that in-
fluenced Hebrew or Greek (which also has an identical expression), that influenced both the Hebrew and
Phoenician. It has also been noticed that a similar expression is found in Elamite inscriptions and Akkadian
inscriptions from Elam from the sixth century BCE, cf. the commentaries on Ecclesiastes, especially that
of H.L. Ginsberg, Qohelet, Jerusalem 1961, pp. 44-45; R. Gordis, Koheleth, the man and his world; a study
of Ecclesiastes, New York, 1968? , p. 205; and O. Loretz, Qohelet und der Alte Orient, Wien, 1964 pp. 46-
47. Anyhow, the entire pair bhym / tht ¿m3 is found only in Phoenician and Hebrew. Therefore, we should
like to suggest that the pair originates in Phoenician and that the same applies to its component tahat
hasiemel.
