Dear Graduate,
For some a degree is a powerful instrument, used in
life to advance a cause, an idea, a movement. Yet for
others it falls limp, not a door opener, nor used to
upset the status-quo: Just a piece ofpaper that cost a
lot.
So what makes the difference?
From fourdecades ofwatchingyoung peoplegraduate,
the difference I see is how an educational experience
integrates with a student's will and vision in setting
their course for life.
We all love to be surprised: when years later the
person we - under our breath- assumed would mount
to very little, turns an idea on its ear, going way
beyond what any ofus expected. The simple fact is
that I really can't tell what is going on inside your
mind, your heart, your inner life.
Will and vision-two incredibly important factors of
our human personality-can make the difference.
In the will lies unimagined opportunities. In learning
iBrtau Sttlkr to see with a new perspective, into a world obscured
to many, we choose to move forward, testing the
yrcaiiiinit uf barriers, pressing past our inner fears, knowing all
the time that "He who began a good work in you will
cany it on to completion until the day ofChrist Jesus."
Your degree, as a valuable document can open doors.
What matters then is howwe mobilize the accumulated
experience and knowledge once the door has opened.
As aUniversitywehavebeenblessedbyyourpresence.
Go in the strength and power ofGod, serving in this
world even as our Lord Jesus Christ served.

my old Chesbroians - the Robert's yearbook
- blow the dust off the cover and spend some
time with old friends and familiar sights.
Today this yearbook is newtoyou, but someday.
I would imagine, you'll do the \er\' same thing:
v\ander through this significant moment in your
life and. I hope, give thanks to God for His
faithfulness and the blessings of2007-2008.
Enjoy this beautifully created book at this
moment, next week. and a year from now. But
cherish it ten. twenty. and fifty years from now.
It's a tangible marker of where you've been
and where you're going.
