Abstract TwonewYunnanesespeciescollectedbyaSine-Japanesejointpartyof
entomological investigation made in 1992 are described: Laena watanabel sP nov.
(Adeljjnj, Tenebrionidac)and SI、,a(,1・1,pit(1,11.,lle11oisp nov. (Archeocrypticidae). The
formerwasfoundinsoilsamplestakeninatemperatemixedforestinthesuburbsof
Kunming,andthelatterwastakeninatropicalrainforestatMenglun,Xishuangbanna.
Dr. Shun-lobi UENo and Dr. Yasuaki WATANABE, whoparticipatedinaSine-
JapanesejointpartyofentomologicalinvestigationofsoilanimalsinYunnan,southern
chjna,madein theautumnof l992,collectedsomespecimensof tenebrionidand
archeocrypticidbeetlesat Kunmingand Xishuangbanna. They weresubmitted to
the authors for taxonomicstudy. One of them (tenebrionid)was found in thesoil
samplestakeninatemperatemixedforest inthewesternsuburbsof Kunming,and
theother (archeocrypticid)wastakeninatropicalrain forest atMenglun,Xishuang-
banna. Bothwerefoundtobelongtonewspecies,andwillbedescribedinthepresent
paper
Theholotypesofthenewspeciestobedescribedaredepositedinthecollectionof
theShanghaiInstituteofEntomology,AcademiaSinica.

Darkbrown,withantennaeandtibiaeyellowishbrown, mouthparts, tarsjand
hairsonsurfacesgoldenyellow,dorsalsurfacepiceous, ratherstrongly,vjtreously
Shinin9 and feeblymicro-shagreened, ventral surface vitreously shining and partly
alutaceous;eachsurfacedistinctlycoveredwithratherlonghairs. Bodyratherelongate
andconstrictedbetweenbasesofpronotumandelytra.
Headsubdecagona1, feeblyconvexabove,stronglyandirregularly punctate, the
puncturesfusedandrugoseinpostero-1atera1portions:clypeustransverselyhexagonal,
gentlybentdownwardsinfront;genaeraisedandimpunctateinmiddle, feeblypro_
ducedantero-1aterad: fronsborderedfromclypeusbyastraight fronto_clypea1suture
andalsofromgenaebypunctategrooves;eyesme(-tium-sized,gentlyconvexlaterad,
distancebetweenthemabout7timesthewidthoftransversediameterofaneye. An_
tennaereachingbasalportionofpronotum,ratiosofthelengtho「eachsegment from
b‘1sal toapical:0.42,0.2,0.36,0.35,0.31,0.32,0.29,0.28,0.27,0.31, 0.39.
Pronotumsubcordate,slightly wider thanlongandwidest at apjca12/5; apex
almost straight; basegently producedposteriad;sides irregularly beset wjth small
setiferousporesandgentlydeclinedtowardsfinelygroovedlateralmargjns,whjchare
slightlyand irregularly serrate; front angles rounded and hind angles obtuse; djsc
gentlyconvex,stronglypunctate, thepuncturessparser inmiddle,closer and
coarser
inlateralportions,andbecomingrugosenearhindangles.
Elytraabout1.5timesaslongaswide,twicethelengthand l3tjmesthewjdthof
pronotum, widest at themiddle; dorsummoderately convex, thickestslightlybefore
themiddle;discstronglypunctate-striate,eachpuncturewithalongfinehajr: jnter_
vatsgentlyconvexinmiddleandstronglysoinlateralportions,oftenwjtharowof
sparsepunctures;7thto9thintervalsgentlyridgedandslightlycarinateinanterjor
portions, the7thwithasetiferousporeat humeral portion, the9thalso with a few
setiferouspores inbasalportion, thearrangement of poresbeing irregular ineach
sr1ecimen.
Femorawithoutanyspines;ratiosofthelengthsofpro-,meso-andmetatarsomeres:
0.49,0.33,0.29, 0.27, 1.2;0.65,0.32,0.27,0.21,1.2;1.0,0.6,0.31,1.26, respectively.
Bodylength:5.1-6.3mm.

Notes. This newspeciessomewhat resembles Laena (s.str ) thodunga KAszAB,
l973, originallydescribed fromEast Nepal, but canbe discriminated fromthe latter
bythelargerbodycoveredwithlongerhairs,coarserpuncturesonthedorsalsurface,
moreconvexelytralintervals,and the7th to9thgently ridgedandcarinateinthean-

Lae,na (s.str) c/11nensls KAszAB, 1965, from western Yunnan, and L. (Cato/aena)

bedistinguishedbythehairy bodywith toothlessfemora, and from thelatter, it is
easilydistinguishablebythehairyandconvexdorsumofelytra.

Darkreddishbrown,withantennae,mouthparts,outermarginsofpronotumand
elytra,legs,etc.,lighterincolour:dorsalsurfacecoveredwithdecumbentshortgrayish
yellowhairs, thoseonheadmostlydirectedbackwardsand thoseonpronotum and
elytracompletelydirectedbackwards. Ovoidalandstronglyconvexabove.
Headtransverselysubelliptic,gentlyraisedposteriorly,denselyandfinelypunctate;
clypeuswide, produced forwardsand truncatein front; genaesmall, gentlyconvex
above, wjthouter margins hardly produced; fronswide, bordered fromclypeusby
fronto-clypea1suturewhichisfineandwidelyarcuateposteriad, alsobordered from
vertexbyafineridge;eyesrather distinctlyproducedlaterad, diatoneabout4times

Presternalprocesslarge, raised, flattened,andprotrudedposteriad. Fore tjbja
dilatedtowardsapex,acutelypointedatoutercorner,withaninnerend-thorn;mjddle
tibiawith two outerend-thornsand hind tibiawith twoouterandan inner thorns.
Ratiosof the lengthsof pro-, meso-andmetatarsomeres: 0.3, 0.18, 0.15, 0.13, 0.33;
0.35,0.18,0.16,0.15, 0.34; 0.72,0.23,0.17, 0.51,respectively.
Bodylength:ca 2.3 mm.

1964(Fig3),but thepresentspeciescanbedistinguishedfromthelatterbythelarger
andwiderbodyandrowsofobviouslyindistinctpuncturesontheelytra.
